I started drinking beer in the 1940's in the USA. My dad got me going with a tiny glass of the stuff. I loved it. Now it's 2015 and I always search for that taste. So to me rating beer is in the eye of the beholder. The expensive micro brews are like drinking cheap wine to me but you folks that started on it as youngsters look for that taste. Correct me if I'm wrong. I respect the taste of all beer drinkers. It's your choice.

Ummmm.... not sure I understand the analogy you're trying to make. Can you explain what you mean by that?

Also, if you were drinking beer in the 40's, even if you were just a young kid at the time... that makes you what? Around 80? (trying to get some context for the time frame you're describing)

In any event, welcome. Also, be sure to acquaint yourself with the search function on the site. I think you'll find that your question, ahem, comes up from time to time.

Wow, you were drinking beer a decade before my parents were born. You must be a pro. Welcome to the site.

I think you're saying that people like us start on craft beer when we're young so we look for the craft beer taste. But that's not usually true. Many start with similar beer you did and find that their preferences evolve over time. New flavors in new beers keep craft beer exciting.

Would you mind expaining your question? Your post didn't actually mention anything about rating beer :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it is the same with any first. Your first beer is much like the first music you really got in to. It sets the tone for what "beer" or "music" should taste or sound like for the rest of your life. Drinking in the 40s obviously influences tastes. So, I wonder, do you hold similar views on modern music?

Well I didn't start drinking craft beers as a youngster and for me drinking them is not at all like drinking cheap wine. Quite the opposite, mass market beers for me are like drinking jug wine and exploring craft beer offerings is like exploring many small vineyard offerings of fine wines. There are some of the same flavors that I can get from jug wine along with the additional flavors added by the creative use of malts, hops, and brewing techniques. Furthermore, while I get no sense of terroir from mass market beers, I definitely feel there are some clear characteristics that can be found in Belgian style beers, in British beers, and in German beers that many times help me identifiy their origins correctly.

I usually rate them on look, small, taste, feel and overall impression. Im finding it hard to believe you were drinking beers in the 40s, if that's the case you win the award for oldest BA member.

My dad gave me my first tastes of Strohs in the early fifties. I started drinking imports (Belgians and Germans and Guinness) in the 70s, homebrewed in the 80's as well as craft beer at that time. All I can say is that you have either been drinking the wrong beer or the wrong wine. The difference between craft beer and industrial beer is like the difference between lightening and a lightening bug. One is pelasurable and one is not.

Not all of us are youngsters, you know .

I bet you could still pick up a few things here, though, and not stray too far from what you enjoy. There are still a few regional brewers around the country making beer the same way as always, but at the same time expanding their lineup with their own takes on more traditional styles. You could find out what's happening in your neck of the woods for stuff like that.

There has always been more to 'craft' than the latest thing. Interestingly, these days there seems to be a renewed interest in recreating historical brews. One of them might just be up your alley- Anchor California Lager, based on a west coast 1800s recipe. If you give it a shot make sure to report back, and it doesn't have to be a standard 'review'; just say what's on your mind, that's the best kind sometimes.

Well, if you've developed a liking for that particular taste found in BMC beers, and that's what makes ya happy, then cheers! Who's to argue? I hated the taste of BMC beers from the get-go, and only drank 'em for a short period of time - y'know, to drink what everyone else was drinking... Wasn't long before I found much greater satisfaction is spirits. I was all grownsed-up before I checked out the "craft beers" and immediately fell in love with those flavorful and diverse brews.

Taste is the most important. If it doesn't taste good then the other aspects really don't matter much.

I rate beer on taste and mouthfeel mostly. Smell and appearance are just a bonus. Welcome to the site! I hope you find the taste you're looking for.
