I drink the beer then I consider if it's worth the trouble to review it. I'f it's stellar I'll go ahead and write a review, If it's horrible beyond belief I write a review for vengeance. (those somehow keep getting removed)

I rate each category individually. In that order. I go back through and revise descriptions again if there is something I missed such as an odd flavor or a taste I missed the first pass. I review both in bottle and glass. For the "overall" I do an average of all 4 categories aNd tweak to taste. I then read and re-read and proof the review several times until I'm satisfied. I'm thorough I guess. I do that both for others' benefit and my own so I know exactly what a beer meant and felt like to me at the time. I will also tweak in hundredths to set a beer slightly higher or lower than a beer I know I like/dislike more.

I'm not as schooled as most on here, so my approach is also largely influenced by setting and experience. I love the heck out of Gallo, admittedly crappy beer, but it is forever tied to a pretty cool point in my life. Same for Meister Brau. My ratings must therefor be viewed as totally subjective and biased; as such they are more of an attempt at sharing some personal experience rather than an attempt at qualifying their brewing merit.

I don't like rating beers accourding to the ratings they get. All of our palettes are very different. For example if an Ipa lists on the bottle/can that it is more malty than hoppy. You can't rate it horrible (shouldn't) if you only like hoppy ipa's. That beer was intended to be that particular way. Or if you like malty and its hoppy you shouldn't give it a poor rating, it just that you don't care for that style. I like reading about the beer than trying it, thats pretty much how I come up with my ratings.

I didn't see the "Precise" button until after I posted, my fault. I one of those individuals that get stuck somewhere in the middle of those .25's for some crazy reason. (I don't use the phone app and when posting from my phone, 'just log onto the website instead.)
