price affects the beers that I purchase but not the style, what I'm feeling affects the things that I buy more than anything, in any case when I buy the higher priced stuff it's usually for the cellar anyway so it generally has less to do with the style I'm preferring at the moment

I don't drink to get drunk. In fact as long as said beer isn't over priced for the quality It's a winner!

Usually I just pick out the cheapest beer which i like the most. I just store them in my beer fridge which i got from http://goo.gl/aN3M2a for under $100! Thing works like i payed a grand for it. I just let my stockpile of beer pile up

Price definitely influences what I purchase, as our tax system makes higher ABV beers expensive, and imported ones more so. That's not to say I don't buy them, but I tend to get a much more 'balaced' collection.

    Domestic Examples (330ml / 11oz bottles):
Feral Hop Hog IPA (6%) ~$5
    Bridge Road IIPA (8.5%) ~$7.5
    3 Ravens Imperial Stout (9%) ~$9

    Imported Examples:
    Weihenstephaner Hefe/Dunkel/etc (5-6%) ~$6
    Chimay Blue (9%) ~$9
    Nogne O IIPA (10%) ~$15 [500ml]
    Fuller's Imperial Stout (10.7%) ~$20
    La Trappe Quad (10%) ~$30

Style not so much, but beers within that style, yes. I tend to have go to's within a style that I feel offer the best value for the money. I do try new ones though to add to my repertoire.

I know, right? After trying Rochefort 10 and Abt 12, I'm thinking that the monastic life just might be the way to go.

That's really interesting. Are those prices in AUS or US dollars?

Though it can be annoying to deal with, it's cool to see the interaction of legal restrictions and requirements with pricing/brewing. Another example is I was just visiting a friend in Norway, and anything over 4.7% ABV is considered ''strong beer'' or wine, and thus can only be sold at the state-run liquor stores. 4.7% and below can be sold in supermarkets. When I checked out the supermarket beer section, I was surprised to see that some good Norwegian (Nøgne Ø, Haandbrygeriet) breweries are brewing low ABV beers specifically to get them in there. There were also a couple of good session beers from To Øl and Evil Twin on offer. I can imagine I would find myself drinking a lot more session beers if I lived in Norway.

I just buy what seems the most interesting on the shelf. I have a set budget to a degree so if I splurge on one I may take home 3 beers and not 8. But I rarely care too much about price.

I'm too picky for price to affect my preferred styles. My go-to brew is Weihenstephaner Hefeweissen. About $10 for a six pack. However sometimes the reverse happens that a good beer is cheap enough to make me choose it over some better ones, like Zywiec Porter (I'm a bit of an import hound). I'm in a stage of "try every damn thing" right now, though, so this might change.

It really doesn't, unless we're getting into the realm of Mystic's Entropy, which is $40/bottle on the shelf. If I wanna try something, I buy it and try it.

I feel like most have said, price doesn't affect my choice of styles. It definitely affects my choice WITHIN a style. I ain't paying $30 for and IPA if I can have a $8 one that, to me, is just as good.

The only place I've seen price be an issue for me is regarding sours and since I don't really like that style I buy wine for that price instead. $35+

I do buy higher ABV beers over sessions and saisons because of the "bang for your buck" mentality though.

price doesn't affect what i buy besides beer that is $13.99+ for a 6 pack. locally for me that means Sculpin, Grapefruit Sculpin, Green Flash west coast ipa, etc. they're higher priced here.

not sure what it's like in Cali but Stone, Lagunitas, FirestoneWalker, Sierra Nevada are all between $8 and $11 for a 6er while Ballast Point and Green Flash are higher priced than almost all other breweries.

most other craft 6 packs here are between $8.99 and $10.99. im not against spending money but why pay $15 for a 6 pack that is as good as an $11 pack?

i'm not cheap when it comes to my beer! but i will say i have no problem drinking 10 beers while watching my CFB team play so I go Genesee rather than a craft 6, 12 or case

Yeah, price affects what I buy. I'm more likely to grab a sixer of Lagunitas over Ballast Point because of the $5 price difference.

Oh, and when I was down on Cape Cod earlier this month I grabbed a six-pack of Evil Twin's Nomader Weiss thinking it would make for a good beach beer. I brought it to the counter and when the guy quoted my a price of +/- $25 I quickly did an about face and threw it back in the cooler.

No, I do try to buy cheaper beers for my daily drinkers, but I have no problem splurging on an expensive bottle or four pack occasionally.

The cost of living is very cheap where I'm at, so pricing only affects my beer buying in terms of what I can or can't afford. A beer list for me generally would include a couple of six-packs in the $7-11 range per six-pack, a couple of pints of beer in the $3-6 range and a bomber or two at $10-15 per bomber. The styles change some, but that's a basic outing to the bottle shop for me.

Fortunately for my wallet, I love pilseners ... just bought a 12-pack of Warsteiner the other day for about $14. If it cost closer to $30 or $40, while several other bigger ABV styles cost the same, I would still buy the Warsteiner because I love that style so much.

If I follow you, that means we have different beer-buying habits. But it's hard for me to put myself in your situation ... I mean, if Rochefort 10 cost the same as a pilsener, well ... then I would seek out the bigger ABV pretty often. :grinning:

My favorite beers tend to be sours, so price can't be an issue for me.

That said, I love lagers and pseudo-lagers a ton, so those are my everyday drinkers, and they're so very cheap usually.

It helps that I don't really drink for the alcohol content very often anymore, so ABV is pretty irrelevant to me. I don't ever look at it as an alcohol:cost ratio. I also have always believed in splurging on what I really want rather than settling, and I'd rather have the best of something and pay more than go for something of lesser quality to save a few bucks.

Honestly, I mostly ignore price. If I feel something is too expensive, I won't buy it, but it takes a whole lot to give me sticker shock these days.

I don't think we're so different actually, because that's precisely how I feel: if prices are equal, I'll more often than not go for the ''bigger'' beer. However, a good pils you enjoy is cheaper for you to buy than a Rochefort, so you end up getting the pils. For me, those two cost pretty much the same, so I end up getting the Rochefort.
