Is RARE really that good? Is it worth CR + BT'11?

Honestly. I thought it was very tasty, but not as good as the hype would make it seem. There are better bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stouts out there in my opinion.

    I agree with Shane. I enjoyed it...but side-by-side, I preferred '07 BCBS by a pretty decent margin.

yeah i kinda figured CR + BT'11 was too much but it seems if i don't grab one soonish it will just get harder and harder to land one.

Rare would be an improvement over CR and BT.

    Rare is really good.

I would probably would not trade a CR + BT for a bottle but then again the asking price is only going to go up. As far as we know CR and BT will be brewed again, its going to be awful hard to duplicate Rare and more than likely it will never be seen again. If you really want it, it may be worth it.

Please, enlighten me. If there are better ones out there (besides maybe Black Tuesday, depending on my mood), point me to them.

CR + BT is too much. Though I'm also generally of the opinion that I'd rather have 2 great beers than 1...

Hasn't Rare gone for CR 1:1 a couple of times? Seems like a solid trade on both ends...

Regular (08' and 09' specifically) BCBS is better than Rare, but that is obviously just my opinion.

Very good - yes. But I even found this year's (well, 2011) BCBS favorable to the '08 and '09 versions when I tried them back in December. And FWIW, we had Rare that night as well, and it still blew them all out of the water.

That said, I still prefer regular BCBS to "rare" beers like Black Note and KBS/CBS.

Lol, kinda? If it really is comparable to Rare, then yes, absolutely!

Don't get me wrong, I rated Rare pretty damn high. Above it though I rated CBS '11 (draft), CFH '12, and BA Plead the 5th (draft) higher. Still a great beer but the "best" bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout? I'd say no. And certainly not one worth Chocolate Rain and Black Tuesday combined for value alone. (having Chocolate Rain this weekend to evaluate flavor versus value)

Gotcha. Looks like we just have different tastes, imagine that! :grinning:

Really I was hoping you'd list a whole bunch of beers I hadn't had before so I could seek them out!

EDIT: The only one I haven't had from your list is the Churchill's, but I'm hoping to try it this summer on my trip to Cali!

To me it was, and still is the best beer I've ever had.

If I had a Chocolate Rain, I'd probably trade those two for another bottle of Rare.

Rare is the best barrel aged imperial stout i've ever tasted. that's after having just about all the big guns although i've got my barrel aged Hunahpu's vertical waiting in the wings. i'd trade quite a bit for another bottle.
