How hard is it, really, to get Dark Lord?

I mean, aside from the whole one day a year thing.

I do a fair amount of lurking on the Trading forum, stealthily watching and waiting, that someone will post up: ISO (something I can get) FT (something I want). I'm sure many of you do the same. I also frequently check in on the beers I want the most to see who has them available FT. Then, I check out those peoples' Wants, to see if maybe I can offer them something they want to acquire in exchange for a beer I want. Simple enough.

I've noticed, though, that many - if not most of the folks who have Dark Lord on their Wants list are looking for some variant of the beer. It's rare that I ever check in on someone's Wants and see the original/regular version. Obviously I'm just going by what I've seen. But is the original Dark Lord becoming less sought after by people wanting an even more exclusive beer? Or is is still unattainable to 99% of us who don't live in Munster, Indiana? Or both?

I live in Florida, here's how I get it:

every year my friend Tony from Cleveland comes to visit, and he always brings a bottle of Dark Lord.

    The end.

It's easy to get and not that great compared to other limited non-barrel aged stouts.

Having worked alongside many SEALs when I was a USN Rescue Swimmer, I find this hilarious. But if that's really the case, I'll give up now.

You can usually get it somewhat easily with brewery/limited stuff with the right set of eyes.

Plain old Dark Lord isn't rare enough to be desirable. Rumor has it 3 Floyd's soaks each barrel in rare before aging the beer in there, so the rare really comes through in the finished beer.

Tony probably drives through Kentucky on his way there. Maybe he could pick up 2 bottles and I could give him my address.

No problem man. DL used to be my personal whale and I for some reason held off from going after it because I didnt think I had the ammo. Finally decided to and next thing you know I had a cellar full of it haha If you have some quality stuff that your confident a couple of people would be interested in, you can make it happen pretty pain free. Cheers!

If you're not looking for a variant, I'd imagine you could get it pretty easily with an ISO post. Tons of people have amazing, hard to get beers just waiting in their cellar, and are more than willing to part with them to help someone out.

Well the inside skinny is that everyone who gets the 'allowed to buy' ticket (called group sales for some reason) to Dark Lord days gets a 4 pack for $20 a bottle. It is actually made in pretty large volumes - not sure how much, but they make quite a lot.

Everyone who gets the 4-pack also gets a golden ticket to scratch off, and if they win, they get to purchase 1 bottle of one of the barrel variants. I have a hunch that most people who go to DL Day are really only after the barrel variants... the regular is apparently not that amazing anymore, although it was 10 years ago.

I see it come up for trade from time to time, and it really should go $4$ for some other good limited or brewery only release, but people seem to want a lot for it. I will try a bottle one day, but I am not prepared to trade away what people ask for it! I often will bring back a few limited Cali sours from work trips, but every time I go to do it, I realize that I can get way "better" (ie higher rated) beers for the same trade. I think there is a lot of nostalgia and extra value associated because you have to go and get a ticket, and go through all the lines etc...

Exactly! I assume serious question?... Will answer as though it is:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26/7520/

It is a classic beer that is super hyped - one day only and you have to get a ticket to buy it - think Huna from 10 years ago.

Actually fuck it - I will let you know how I get on. Posting an ISO for one of my sours right now.
    Time for an experiment!

We will see! I threw up an IP post in Chicago for either a consecration or supplication with some adds from my cellar to even up the $ since I know I am short $5-6. Frankly, I am not sure if it will get done - I am offering up a good, limited Russian River sour which isn't that hard to get, but you certainly have to trade for it if you live in Chicago. I wouldn't be surprised if I got crickets (or thread shat...). Time will tell!

good luck on that one, pretty curious if it gets done. Also if I may ask, how well do RR sours trade like sup and consecration?
