I've noticed that since I started drinking craft about 5-6 years ago, I have gone through phases in styles. I'm curious to read about your progression in beer styles from when you first started drinking, to now.

    Myself:

    Lagers > Ales > IPA > Stouts > Porters > IIPA > Imperial Stouts > Belgians > Barrel Aged Stouts > Barleywines > Fruit Beer > Sours

I'm still trying to learn to appreciate Sours, but I'm beginning to think they are not for me.

Interesting coincidence - I just wrote this up in an email recently to another beer buddy:

    "Shitty lager
Stouts like Guinness, Murphy's and Beamish
    German Weissbiers (Weihenstephaner, Julius Echter)
First slight taste of hops: Sam Adams
    IPAs (Harpoon, Stone, etc)
Belgian Golden Ales (Duvel, Delirium Tremens, etc)
Belgian Abbey / Trappist (Chimay, Orval)
    Belgian Dubbel (Westmalle)
    Belgian Tripel (Achel, Karmeliet)
Belgian Quadrupels (holy shit! what is this Rochefort 10 thing? It's awesome!)
    Kriek (Mort Subite)
Gueuze (Lindemans was my first try, totally hated it, gave up on the style for a while)
    Barleywines (Bigfoot)
    Scotch Ales / Wee Heavies
    Russian Imperial Stouts (mind: blown)
    Bocks / Doppelbocks / Eisbocks
Imperial / Double IPAs (Pliny the Elder, etc)
American Porters / Stouts (Speedway Stout)
Barrel-Aged Stouts (Goose Island Bourbon County)
    Saisons (Dupont)
    Gose
Flanders Red Ales / Oud Bruin Ales (Duchesse de Bourgogne)
American Wild / Sour Ales (Russian River)
Back to Lambics, Krieks and Gueuze again, they're my obsession now."

    Ameriican pale lagers --> brown/amber/pale ales --> Belgian golden ales --> IPAs --> Imperial IPAs --> Tripels --> Hefeweizen/witbiers

I thoroughly enjoy every style still (minus the APL). I drink each regularly.

I've been all over the map for the last 20 yrs. I don't think I'd be able to pick a solid pattern out of any of it.

Fair enough. Were there any styles you tried in the beginning that you disliked, but later ended up enjoying them?

It took me a while to acquire a taste for really hoppy beers. I didn't find them repugnant, but at first the bitterness just smacked me in the face. I liked them early on, but enjoy them much more now. Still not a hophead, but they are great when the mood strikes.

That's me in a nutshell too. I'll try anything at least once. Took me a couple years to get to gueueueueze for some reason, but other than that I just grab whatever sounds good or interesting and try it. And I try to keep an open mind as well. I've only had one faro so far (Lindemans) and hated it though.

As far as Stouts and Porters go, I don't drink them. It's not that I don't like them per say, I just never find myself craving one like I do so many other styles of beer. Maybe in due time I will grow to want to drink them, but as of now, I never find myself wanting to.

Not quite an evolution but an order of when I started liking the respective styles. I still love almost all styles of beer.

I Started drinking beer in college, whatever fizzy yellow water was cheapest. Turned 21 and started drinking at the brew pub in town(bulldog brewery). I would try anything however quickly identified with hoppy flavors. Pale ales, up through IPA's into doubles and imperials. Still would try anything given the chance, but I remember trying a Storm King after a few years of drinking craft and thinking it was awful.
Graduated college and quickly became burnt out on hops. I started to dive into the maltier side of things and found love in scotch ales, barleywines, quads, doubles, dopplebock, stouts. Imperiled and barrel aged versions of all these and so on. This is where my flavor preference lies now. I believe partly because I started a cellar, and aging beer has begun to fascinate me. However hops will always be my first love and I have no problem getting down with a good double IPA any day of the week.
Currently becoming increasing interested in sours and triples and have since grown love for wheat beers. And in the end I don't know if I will ever grow to love pilsners. I guess they get lost in the crowd for me.

For the better(I hope!)...I am one to get stuck in a "beer rut" buying only one style for awhile, but once I switch the style up I have new eyes, and a new rut.....
