A couple people have said this already, but what I like in "hoppy" beers totally changes all the time. Lately, I like juicy, tropical, citrusy beers that aren't piney. Occasionally, all I want are beers with huge floral and piney aromas and flavors as well.

BUT... Define "hoppy." One hoppy beer can clock in at 100+ IBU and another can be right around 75, and people might find that the 75 IBU beer seems more harsh because of the type of hop flavor being percieved.

And for the record, I'm with the people who didn't particularly enjoy Palate Wrecker. I went through my four pack in about 2 weeks and my last bottle was much better than my first. That beer was a damn mess on day one and I didn't really see the point in drinking it. It's kinda like having an extremely hot hot sauce that puts you in pain and doesn't have nice flavor, rather than having a really hot hot sauce that is worth the sweat because it actually tastes good.

I've never experienced this punch in the face, too much to handle, feeling. All IPAs and DIPAS go down smooth. I've also never had Palate Wrecker or Devil Dancer.

honestly i don't think there is such a thing since everyone has their own preference of what they like to see in an IPA...sometimes you can drink one that is incredibly balanced, other times you can have a hop bomb that'll just jump out and slap you in the face. both are great IMO

I never exclaim how hoppy beers are but I had Shotgun Willy last weekend at Peekskill and ended up having that exact moment. This was after a couple other hoppy beers from them so I'm surprised how hard it bit through palate fatigue. Could've had something to do with how dank that nose was or the fact I had been driving through a low visibility rain storm for three hours.

I agree with you, palate wrecker just doesn't do it for me, too unbalanced. Same with resin for me, and I've had both fresh and not so fresh multiple times. Never had DD and I'm going to try my first double croked tree tonight

Been a long time, but this was too much for me at the time. I belched hops for days after choking on it. Haven't crossed anything like it since.

I've had too sweet, I've had too salty. In beers, I've even had too malty, but I've never had to hoppy.

However, there is a certain point at which IBUs become redundant and nothing more than bragging rights, because human taste buds can only detect up to a certain level; I've heard between 100 and 200; nothing higher.

I don't know about too hoppy, but too one dimensional, yes (I'd like to detect at least a tiny malt presence in IPA/DIPAs).

Stone Ruination is too one-dimensional for me. I have yet to try Palate Wrecker because I can never find even remotely fresh Green Flash in northern VA.

And they market it as a TIPA (Triple IPA). are there any others? I know of belgian tripels, but are there other TIPA beers specifically called such?

For me it's not the hoppiness level itself, but the bitterness that can be too much. With any flavor in food or drink, it's the technique and flavor profile that matters more, not the amount of the ingredient used.

Hopsickle is labelled Triple Hoppy. Not to be confused with Triple Hops Brewed.
