There are those who say they never enjoyed the buzz, and that the buzz had nothing to do with attracting them to want to continue to drink alcoholic beverages. I say this is a lie. This is my opinion.

Can you imagine someone eating a food for the first time, they loved the taste, but it gave them gas and diarrhea. But they continue to eat that food, despite the unpleasant effects, in fact, grew to like it well enough to join a website about that food, and to eat that food regularly? That is the equivalent of what some folks are saying about an alcohol buzz, they hate it, but they love beer so well for the taste that they endure it.

No one is arguing that a buzz is the only reason they drink fine beer, though some say it is a main reason, some say it is a minor reason. And of course this is true, if a buzz is all you want there is Red Mountain Pink Chablis or Popov Vodka. What isn't true is folks who say they hated the alcohol buzz right from the start, but loved the taste so well right from the start that taste was the only factor that drew them to drink beer, and it is such a great taste they endure the bad buzz they dislike in order to enjoy it. They deny enjoyment of the buzz has anything to do with it, almost as if admitting they like the buzz says something bad about them, and they need to conceal it.

I do know an autistic boy who pokes himself with sharp objects and bangs his head into the wall, but I doubt the equivalent mindset is a fine beer drinker and member of this group.

I drink coffee for the ritualized behavior of it. As explained earlier, I no longer drink caffeinated coffee. So yes, I would (and continue to) drink coffee without caffeine. I would do the same with beer if there was more variety of non alcoholic beer that tasted similar to a guinness foreign extra stout, or a victory dirt wolf.

Did you not enjoy the pick me up aspect of coffee? Do you feel it is wrong to enjoy the drug effects of what we imbibe? Was part of the reason you had your second and third cups of coffee, after you tried it for first time, because they made you feel good as well as that they tasted good? These are some of the root questions of this thread concerning beer.

Actually, it's thousands of years ago, and like I said, If not for the buzz, it would not exist today.
Do you really believe there was ANYTHING else appealing about the first "beer" ?

Yes, I admitted earlier I drank coffee AT FIRST because of the caffeine. However, for health reasons, I have stopped drinking caffeine, and instead drink decaf. Why? Because I enjoyed the routine of having a hot cup of something dark to sip on while I do the crossword puzzle. The caffeine has long ago stopped being the reason I continued to drink coffee.

Do I feel it is wrong to imbibe? Absolutely not. I never said, nor suggested that.

But it really ISN'T the root questions of this thread, at least with regards to what the OP asked originally. He never said "if you tried beer, and hypothetically if it never had alcohol, would you still drink it". He just simply asked us, in the here and now, if getting a buzz is a part of why we drink.

In the HERE AND NOW, it is no longer the reason I drink beer. Do you not believe me when I say that?

I have gone back and read most of the replies, and I can't actually find anyone who said that not once was a buzz EVER part of the reason. I have found a few people who like myself, said that it is no longer the reason, but not that it wasn't EVER the reason. If I missed those posts, I apologize and politely ask that you quote them for me.

I agree with you 100% For me it is taste more than anything else. I quite Like English Bitters because most have great taste and very low ABV. Guinness has low ABV and tastes great... Don't get me wrong I don't dislike a buzz but I do not like getting hammered... I know I know the Northern Irish guy said he does not like getting hammered STOP THE PRESS :grinning:

What was your point? That you like coke, you like beer, and sometimes you drink beer and sometimes you drink rum and coke? Sorry if I'm being dense, but I didn't really see a point.

Agree!! In many places drinking water supplies were a genuine danger to our Ancestors we need fluids to survive but water could and still can kill you (and I do know it is the microbes in the water that does the killing)... brewing beer or making wine was a sure fire way of sorting the problem...

But it wouldn't taste the same, so we don't have to worry about this magical what if scenario.

I believe he is saying that they would not have continued to make it without the effects of the buzz. not that they developed it for the buzz.
