@rollom you're a member of a beer forum haha. I don't need to drink every day either but the fact that I drop $20-30 (which is quite mild compared to many of you) every time I go to a bottle shop, look over this site daily to get the latest updates on new/limited releases, know beer release dates better than friends birthdays, can tell you what beer comes from what brewery most of the time...you don't think that sounds like a bit of an addiction or obsession? Compared to hundreds of ppl on this site I'm mild. If you're willing to go above and beyond for something whether it be exercise, fashion, cooking, or drinking beer than it is a mild addiction. Seeing as how there is no oceansprayadvocate or nestlequikadvocate I'd say alcohol is a bigger factor than you are willing to admit.

It was the main point during college. Now, it's not a factor at all for me. As I've told people before, I learned how not to drink in college. Now I drink for the taste and pleasure of the product. I'd love it if I could go out to a bar and did not have to worry about how much I drink or needing a designated driver if I go to certain beer tasting events. Not to mention the aftereffects drinking too much can bring. So if I could get the taste of a Bourbon County Stout with 0% alcohol, I'd prefer it to what we have today. But this is all a moot discussion since that's not the way it is or ever will be. So I watch how much I drink and make sure I have a designated driver if I need one.

Why does being a member of a beer forum mean someone is addicted to beer? Jesus Christ, they need an extra emoji on here with a smiley face blowing it's brains out. Are you purposefully being simple minded?

And now you're talking about something else entirely. The obsessive types (as there are in any hobby, especially ones with a collectible aspect) who make sure they get hold of the latest releases, and the rarest offerings etc, and take extreme steps to get hold of beers, are just that - obsessive. They may or may not have an alcohol problem, but one has no bearing on the other.

@rollom obsessed and addiction aren't loosely interchangeable? I'm sorry but the casual drinker

The casual drinker isn't a member of a forum dedicated to beer. The casual drinker won't spend hundreds of dollars on alcohol let alone base a vacation around brewery locations. Look at the amount of money you've spent and the amount of time you've spent on this site...would the average drinker do that? No cut the self righteous bs out

You know I am not. I made myself crystal clear. I am done beating this horse to death. I didn't call you a liar, I called those a liar who said that a buzz was never an influence in their desire to enjoy a beer. That isn't what you said, you said it has been but now is not, and I take you at your word.

Or, correct me if I am wrong, and you did say that a buzz never had anything to do with your enjoyment of, or desire for, a beer. 'Cause if you said that, then I did in fact call you a liar.

Wait now! I was in the forums every single day because they were pleasant and I was having a beer a day too. When my life became a bit busy I was not around so much and you all can notice that is true. I spend my money on good beer because that's who I am. I want the good beer. I have planned vacaions around going to breweries too. I have met people through beer, because of beer, whom I did not know outside of beer. Those people have become my friends. The beer is the excuse but it's those people that are the real reason. They know it and I know it. I am even going to brew a beer for the first time because of all this society. Cheers!

I'm not being self righteous, simply pointing out that you're fairly moronic. There are "casual" craft drinkers who are full blown alcoholics. And there are highly obsessed beer nerds who are not. Do you understand that?

Being addicted to something means you are dependant on it, even if it could cause you harm. Please learn the definition before you continuously throw it around and use it incorrectly.

No worries. Like I said, the pretentious attitude some people seem to have is what annoys me.

I would drink good craft beer if it had no alcohol whatsoever simply because it tastes so damn good! Sometimes it's nice to have the buzz, and other times it's a pain in the ass because you want to drink more but can't (like when you have to drive after, have work in the morning, etc.).

Okay I give up beer is by far the most delicious thing on the planet and that's the sole reason we do the outrageous things we do for it. Ask any non drinker if they think the things you do for craft beer are absurd and I'm sure we both know what the answer will be. Would you do the things you do for any other beverage or even food? Probably not. You are acting as though every time you drink a beer it's a tasting event which is ridiculous. Do you fools honestly believe alcohol in general has been consumed and wildly popular since the dawn of time because of taste alone? Trust me in the realm of craft beer taste is paramount but you aren't just drinking beer or doing things widely considered out of the norm simply for taste.

Just for the record, decaffeinated coffee contains caffeine. While there may not be a lot, there's certainly enough for your brain to recognize.

@rollom Obsessions can be harmful as well. An addiction does not need to be full blown dependency. I'm addicted to caffeine and nicotine...Trust me I can go without either if necessary. Some people get addicted to the gym which can certainly be harmful but I highly doubt they're dependent on it.

Why does this have to be ridiculous? Craft beer is about celebrating the taste not the buzz. Any type of alcohol can get you buzzed.

Actually, yeah, the early days of brewing beer were more about nourishment and taste rather than getting drunk. In fact, it wasn't that long ago when kids were drinking beer in the old country because the water was not safe to drink. The boiling process was a way to purify the water and the malts added flavor to the beverage. Its only quite recently that we've become raging alcoholics. As far back as ancient Egypt, beer was so low in ABV% that people didn't drink it for the buzz effect, it was simply a good tasting beverage.

Which would negate the "not drinking for the buzz" idea. You may think you're not drinking that coffee for the caffeine, but the brain is making the connection.

Edit: And same goes for the beer.

@doppletheGOAT I hate to burst your bubble but people have been getting drunk forever....it's not a recent development. People have always been drawn to alcohol and other stimulants bc of what...oh yeah the buzz. Drug use and alcohol consumption has been very common for ages. You are in fact acting self righteous and nobody celebrates everything the intake whether it be food or beer.
