Hi. I'm wondering how long PBW and Star San are effective once mixed according to instructions. I keep them in airtight containers such as a fermenting bucket or corny keg. Thanks.
I've heard when starsan is mixed with distilled water it's good for at least 1-2 years. Pbw I'm not so sure about. If you are storing pbw long term definitely don't store in plastic.
1) what about regular water for the starsan 2) why not store PBW in plastic What's considered long term? And are these supposed to be air tight? Thanks.
1. Regular water is fine depending in the ph. I forget the ph range for starsan but its not as effective when out of the range but I wouldn't worry about it as long as your water is drinkable. 2. I had pbw crack one of my better bottles that was stored for a week. I contacted BB and they don't recommend leaving pbw in one of there fermenters for a more than a couple days. There's info on the better bottle site about pbw.
So starsan can store for a long time, PBW probably not unless in a keg maybe? How do I know when they lost their effectiveness? This is why I go through so much, I don't know how long I can store for and how to determine if it's no longer effective.
As long as your star San mix isn't cloudy I don't worry about it. I've even used star San that was cloudy and it worked fine.
