Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.

strongly doubt that, but i don't see people rushing to correct this if they hold any rare.

i don't either. just pointing out that both sides seem to be angling toward their self-interest here (duh).

i don't really care about the value wars, but it's pretty clear that spontaneously fermented beer is going to vary more from batch to batch than rare varies from other same-base-beer, different-barrel treatments.

edit: incidentally, by the same token, b5 beatification (assuming taste makes any difference at all) value in the future should at this point be a giant question mark. past beatifications apparently aged well, but who knows what this beer will taste like in even 6 months.

it's all pretty much in flux... if the lessons of the past hold (which i think they won't, since trading is undergoing a big overhaul as is craft beer in general), a beer like rare would only get more valuable (see wooden hell, etc).

however, i would guess it's more likely (especially given the giant amount of rare that was made, and the genuine deliciousness of it causing people to consistently drink it) that in a few years people will start truthfully reporting that rare has peaked, other BCBS variants are superior at the moment, and rare's value will plummet. we'll see.

beatification of course has little chance of holding the high value its name has commanded either, due to its abundance, but it at least is a style that has a chance of tasting better in 10 years. (shrug)

edit: p.s. to spectators looking for lulz, i predict some funny trading events in the near future, as non-cali people start shooting for the stars with the numerous beatification bottles they were traded.

i've never had an AWA that got better with time, but people say old beatification batches have (i haven't had).

the freshness issue really throws a wrench into people's usual hoarding / collecting / bargaining habits.

I have a rare and would not trade it for 3 Beats. If I wanted to trade it for Beatification I would ask 6:1, and before someone jumps on me as that being a ridiculous offer, I wouldn't really expect anyone to take it. Rare is my 1 or 2 favorite beers ever. It would take a lot to trade my last one. BTW, my Rare is not for trade.

i've felt the same way about many less glamorous beers than rare(:.

while it may be true that every beer has a price as long as the people involved are active traders, it's worth constantly reiterating that value is not objective. e.g. i have 2 sucabas at the moment, and i don't think any of you would give me what you'd need to in order to get them from me.

haha, ya, i'm waiting for the op of this thread to throw up some ridiculous offers with the case he got muled for him. i was really surprised at his whiny attitude considering how much he had coming his way.

sure, people are asking way too much for this beer.

yes, i linked to oreo's thread.

i think by definition, if you can trade for a case of something, people are not being stingy with it. but i'm sure there are going to be serious lulz when those bottles are retraded by people who have a history of asking too much for their beers.

This may be, but I expect if they rerelease "Rare" they'll call it something else. The little story written on the label of Rare states emphatically it will NEVER be made again. I don't think it would be wise to make such a claim and go back on it...regardless of AB's involvement. Granted, what the fuck do I know? I just don't see it happening. I could see them doing something like Eclipse though...and doing the Bourbon County in a variety of bottles.

Oh they'll call it something else. And either tweak the recipe slightly or put it in a different barrel and call it Bourbon County Rarer. Ultimately it will be close enough to the same beer. Most small batch limited release stouts have plenty of variation year to year - I doubt Bourbon County Rarer will be all that different from Rare...

not that anyone cares, but i'll again note how crass and condescending it was to emphasize how the beer would never be made again. if it's so great, why the fuck not? it's the maximum bourbon county stout, but even if you get more pappy 23 barrels you won't make it again?

it doesn't say anything to the quality of the beer, but the marketing was a real patronizing fuck you to beer geeks (that they of course ate up). suffice to say, the whole pissing in the glass at the bar story did not surprise me when it occurred a few months later.

(pre-emptive reply in case anyone is stupid enough to reply, "it's their beer, they can choose to not make it again if they want!" of course, but the point is that they made a stink about how it's the best shit ever, but inexplicably it "won't" be made again. not, "man that was a nightmare, won't go through that again," but [be honest], "hey you rarity chasing idiots, here's the RAREST beer around, it's SUPER VALUABLE so you have to pay a premium! appetite whetted yet, morons? GO BUY IT.")

I always assumed it was the Hall's way of saying "farewell". Pure speculation on my part, but that's par for the course in here.

    Love you too Levitation. <3

I will not be trading any of this. I don't trade my favorite beer.

To be fair, I regret making that thread anyways. I made that thread after it survived the weekend. It then lasted another 2 weeks. After I saw how many of my friends got bottles being purchased for them straight up for cash I realized there were more good than greedy people out there.

Edit - I should also point out that all of the B5 came from my favorite trading partner. She hooked me up with this and I gave her an awesome box in return. I traded for none on the site.

you should regret making the thread for transparently trying to drive the value down of a beer you wanted. or, alternately, of strangely caring that people were "asking too much" for a beer, as if that's any of your business, or something that won't fix itself.

    edit:
it's possible that there's another, innocent, explanation that's gone over my head too, but i doubt it. i've never heard any competing theories that are anywhere near as believable / accord with the facts as well as "crass pandering to beer fans who love shiny things."

all righty then. glad we agree the thread was unnecessary. and obviously, self-serving (since your rage quieted once you and your friends got a few cases).

no " clever girl " for her?

I think you're being hypercritical. I'd be inclined to agree with you if the beer sucked, but it's the best BA beer I've had (edit - *one of the best...before someone starts reading my reviews). I think most of us chortled at the "rarity" of a 12,000+ bottle release, but to characterize it as "crass", "condescending" and "a real patronizing fuck you" is dramatic.

The label as it reads on the bottle: "This stout was aged for two years in the finest old barrels goose island has used in its 18 years of bourbon barrel-aging beers! A true rarity-savors and share it with only those you hold dear, as it will never be made again. Cheers!"
