How many gallons are permissible under the federal law? You may be pushing the limit, but I'll never tell.

Individual states remain free to restrict or prohibit the manufacture of beer, mead, hard cider, wine and other fermented alcoholic beverages at home.[18] For example, Ala. Code ยง 28-1-1 addresses the illegal manufacture of alcoholic beverages in Alabama, and no other provision of Alabama law provides an exception for personal use brewing.
However, most states permit homebrewing, allowing 100 gallons of beer per adult per year and up to a maximum of 200 gallons per household annually when there are two or more adults residing in the household.[19] Because alcohol is taxed by the federal government via excise taxes, homebrewers are restricted from selling any beer they brew. This similarly applies in most Western countries. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a bill allowing home beers, which was at the time not permitted without paying the excise taxes as a holdover from the prohibition of alcoholic beverages (repealed in 1933).[18] This change also exempted home brewers from posting a "penal bond" (which is currently $1000.00) which had the prohibitive effect of economically preventing brewers of small quantities from pursuing their hobby.

Looking back at my log books, the last four years I've brewed around 15 batches per year, about 3/4ths extract. I love to brew all grain, but time and space constraints are a hindrance for me. Also, I mainly brew simple hop foward, sessionesque pale ales, and I've been more than pleased with the results I've gotten from malt extract. For myriad reasons it gets an undeserved bad rap. I knocked out a 1.060 extract IPA on Saturday morn last in around 3.5 hours. I know the beer is going to be fantastic.

I do about 5-6 batches per year, a mix of 3gals and 5gals, usually higher gravity or beers that require bulk aging/storage (sours). when I do 5gal batches I will take the 2nd runnings and make a 3gal different beer.

I've only done 2 batches so far this year but have 5 beers/variants/blends from it.
have plans for 2 more batches this year that should yield me another 4-5 beers/variants/blends...

Hmm...probably on track for about 40 this year?

We started out doing one 5-gallon batch in a brew session. Then it went to two 5-gallon batches. Then it went to a 10 gallon batch...

Lately we've been doing 10 gallon batches of "pipeline" beers and 5 gallon batches of experimental stuff on the side in a brew session. We do this probably 3 times a month but sometimes less, sometimes more. It's getting a little out of control. We've run out of carboys and kegs to put beer into, which is not a huge deal because we won't be able to brew again for 3 or 4 weeks due to family stuff. In the meantime, we will be freeing up keg space.

Couldn't agree more. Extract brewing - which I still do on occasion - makes damn good beer but the process seems to get looked down upon. Oh well...

I would say I average 25 batches a year, which vary from 3 to 10 gals each, with most in the 5 gal range. This also comes out to about 4 barrels per year.

At least 15, but never more than 20 10 gallon batches because that would put me over the legal limit.

Over the past several years I have averaged around 25-30 batches a year. This year has been particularly hectic at work and my hobby has suffered for it; I have only brewed a whopping 6 times so far this year. Hoping to finish the year strong and get in another 6 batches or so.

I've been at this since last January, I'm on my 5th batch. So, about 1 batch every two months. Some times they're back-to-back, some times I'm too busy.

I've done 13 this year as of tomorrow. Still planning to do another 3-5 more before the year's out. That seems about right for me. About 15-20 per year.

Only 5 or 6 for me. I rarely make session-able beers so even that many is far too much.

Average of 8.43 / year for 14 years = 118 batches. Batch 119 on Sunday (with any luck).

not enough, as I'm still buying commercial beer.

I probably am on track for about 30 batches this year. I'd really like to brew somewhere between every weekend and every other weekend, optimally.

I do enjoy craft beer tho, I'll probably never completely stop buying commercial beer. I also like supporting local breweries in particular, so for that reason, I'll always keep buying the best my locale has to offer. Currently I'm quite enjoying "The Sword Iron Swan" by RABC*, and everything (currently four offerings) from Texas Big Beer (I especially like the big blonde and the working stiff ale).

*The Sword is an English ale, although it's a bit hoppier and fruitier than typical, and it's created as a tribute to Iron Swan, by The Sword, one of my favorite bands. Since I play in a metal band, you know I'm going to like kick-ass bands like The Sword. Also, the beer is damn tasty too. I've really liked it, have bought several sixers so far, and will continue to do so till it's gone.

    Awesome brewing music.

My high was the year before my daughter was born (2009) with 24 batches. My low was 2010 (she was born in April) with 9. I think I am at about 12 so far this year, so a little over a batch per month.
