I just tried my hand at a few batches of rootbeer. I started to think about if it would be any healthier than the stuff you buy at the grocery store. I never really dug into how calorie calculators worked with brewing beer, or if there are adjustments for each of the ingredients. Is there an estimation on how many calories are in a gravity point?
OG is a measure of the sugar concetration of the wort. Calories also depend on the quantity! Roughly there will be 5 calories per GP per Imperial pint..
I'm kind of a calorie counter, and I use a very rough rule of thumb. For every 3% of ABV, I estimate 100cal. 6% pale? 200cal. 9% DIPA? 300 cal. 12% barleywine? 400 cal. 15% BCBS? 500 cal. These all assume 12oz portions. Yep, every BCBS you drink is like a cheesburger
Bigfoot = 9.6% so my formula is pretty spot on. Either way, this just gives me a ballpark of the damage in a night and how many hours I need to work out the next day lol.
I suppose this is why I have gained weight since I have started drinking more DIPA's and stouts. All my favorites are more than 7 or 8%.
That's a horrible rule of thumb, only works for 3,6,9 & 12% beers. I prefer my rule of thumb of 33 1/2 calories per % of ABV
Both of those rules of thumb have more or less the same results but I suppose it is easier just to multiply 33.3 by the ABV.
