I just give a straight 1,2,3,4 or 5. So I have given quite a few, but I try to aim for something of an even curve to avoid any sort of grade inflation.

I have a small margin of error. I have given very few beers high 4's and very few beers 1's or 2's, those are absolute nasty drain pour beers. I have yet to rate a 5, but I think I have my hands on a a few and hope to gather a few more in the coming months. I am on target now to giving my first 5 because my palate is more educated as well as my general knowledge of beer. Most of my beers range from 3.5-4.5, some may not agree with the scores I have given to some, but I take into consideration not only how much I enjoy a beer, but also how much it cost and how easy it was to obtain. Once those are knocked out then if its outstanding it will get a high for or maybe even the elusive 5. Additionally, I have a hard time giving anything a perfect numeric score, even the best have some flaws in one way or another.

None so far, but I have a lot of 4.5's. Closest I had was a bon-chien (4.75). Honestly I am probably a little easier with my 5's on untappd since they do not offer .25's/precise. Usually I'll round up on untappd and be more precise on BA.

I've given a TON of 5's, in some cases because I'm being generous, or am influenced by the hype surrounding a beer.

With that said, largely I give out a lot of 5s because my definition of a 5 is not "there can be nothing better" or "this is perfect" but more like "if I went to a bar, and this beer was on tap, would I give even a moment's hesitation to ordering it?" If the answer is "no" then it gets a 5.

I should be more clear; it's not just "would I order this again" that generates a 5, but "would I feel like I needed to even see the rest of the list". Admittedly I'm often in bars that have multiple 5-worthy offerings, but that's neither here nor there.

edit: After looking, I should also intensify my first comment that a lot of them are 'charity' 5s... I'm at 171 out of 1136 or nearly 15%... I drink a lot of great beer, but that's got to be too many 5s.

Only one perfect 5 - BCBS

Two 4.9s - FBS, Burton Baton

Five 4.85s and a number of 4.75s....like fifteen or so.

I think a 5 for me is something that not only is the best example of its style but also fits my specific taste profile....it needs to all come together in a perfect storm really. If I don't LOVE the style then i likely can't tell what a perfect version of it would be, so I would hesitate to ever proceed with a 5. BCBS, FBS, and Burton Baton are beers I constantly crave and enjoy, they represent everything a beer drinking experience should be for me and only one of those hit the 5 mark.

Zero. I don't think I'll ever rate any as a "perfect" score. But I certainly have a lot in the 4.75-4.9 range, which to me is on the order of 'if I see it available, it's a must buy'.

Just watched Good Will Hunting and when I see people searching for the "perfect beer" I immediately thought of Robin Williams and Matt Damon's conversation about perfection. This is the gist of what Robin Williams says:
Maybe these beers aren't perfect, but they're perfect for me.

Pretty Things Barbapapa and Trillium Fort Point Pale Ale

I've never given a 5, because to me that means that I will never have a beer better than that one. I don't think that's possible.

I had 4 Perfect 5s but I doubt that I would rate any to them at that level if I reviewed them now. While there are many here who can adequately judge a beer, I must admit that my ratings are based on how much I liked a beer rather than it adherence to style guidelines. I find that my taste preferences continue to evolve. That is probably a good thing as I note that my rDev on those "5s" was pretty high.

I haven't given any Perfect 5s, but I still have less than 100 reviews, and I've had a few beers which were damn close.

Perfect 5s should be rare. Matter of fact, I think you should have a beer a couple times before you give it a perfect score, though I concede that won't always be easy, and probably not a popular suggestion.

I also think you should give a full review if you're going to call a beer "perfect." (Again, probably not a popular idea.)
