How many times will you try a beer before you write it off...

    For me it's normally 3 beers (usually on separate nights) if I buy a 4 or 6 pack. I hesitate to write a beer off after 1 bottle, unless I found it to be just awful, to the point I wouldn't want to put myself through such torture ever again.

    The progression usually goes something like this...beer 1..eh, it's ok...I'll try it again later...beer 2....ok, this is much better than I remember...they might be on to something here..beer 3....wow...this brew is awesome! If by beer three I'm still stuck at phase 1, I don't buy it again, or sometimes I won't even finish the 6er. I found this to be true with 2 of my favorites, Duvel and Green Flash West Coast IPA. Anyone else do something similar when trying new beers or have current favorites that didn't win them over at first taste??

    By the 3rd beer of a four or six pack, I have a fairly good idea of how I feel about the beer. By the 4th beer, I'm usually certain as to whether I'd want to buy it again.

    This is why I never get mixed six-packs and why I don't prefer bombers. I just may be in a bad mood when I cracked open that one beer...or maybe I'm starting to get sick...or my kids are making so much noise I can't concentrate...or maybe I just brushed my teeth...

    There are a multitude of things that affect how I perceive a beer. I need to give it more than just one shot. Why would I potentially want to miss out on beer I might love just because I wasn't in the right mood?

    When I come across a beer I haven't tried yet, I go to a store where singles are sold and buy 2 - preferably cold. Drink one when I get home and one the next day or week. If it's warm when I buy it, I chill it and wait to the next day for the first one. However, if I see something new I want to try, I prefer to go somewhere it's on tap so I can try a sample and save some cash. If I like it, I get a full pour. If I don't, I just order the tried and true.

    At least two. If I ever slam something in a rating that I feel should have been better, or just even standard, I'll always make a note to track down a second bottle from a different batch.

    It depends on how many I buy. I usually buy a sixer, and aside from one time, I have always finished the sixer. So 6 times. If I don't like or simply think it was overpriced etc after that sixer I will usually write it off. Alot of the beers I write off I will usually give another try after a year or so has passed and sometimes it I like them and sometimes it just re-affirms what I previously thought. As for singles or drafts, I have to really hate them to not try them again. I usually give another try and I am more forgiving with drafts for some reason.

    Usually two--I have enough beer that I like to not buy stuff that I think is average--that said if I have a six pack, I will finish it or share it with friends who may like it.

    Twice. If I didn't like it the first time and I didn't like it a second time, then there's no need to continue with it.

    Ill typically give a beer a two or three run try before I write it off completely. And sometimes its not a matter or bad beer its just my particular taste.

    Two, but the second would have to be a different batch (unless I had a cold or something when I had the first one). I'd only be giving it a second chance in case something was wrong with the first one.

    This obviously can be different with imperial stouts or sours that could change with age.

    Usually twice, sometimes three times. Just to make sure it wasn't some outside factor influencing the taste. It would be tough for something to go from "whoa...this sucks I don't like it" to "this is awesome" for me. The first impression does weigh heavily, but I try and temper that a bit to try and give fair treatment. A style that is new to me - will give extra leeway since part of the deal is learning about the style.

    Then again...you ever have one that is such a train wreck that you keep trying it just to make absolutely sure? Old Fezziwig - I personally find that to be just a hot mess, but for some reason I kept trying it over and over again. Maybe it was the season creating some extra benevolence on my part, but I gave that stuff more than a fair shake.

    Rarely more than once. If I have something I didn't particularly like, but it's highly rated, I might try it again. Or, if it's been a really long time (tastes change over time). After two I give up for sure. Too many delicious beers out there to waste time and money and calories on beer I don't enjoy.

    if it's rare/rarish and i'm lucky. twice. if it's easily available, maybe 3 times. i'll usually give something another go if a year or two has passed.
