I've will be adding my DH hops this evening, and wondering what amount to do? The recipe is a big (9.2% ABV, 92 IBU) DIPA. I'm using Zeus, Galaxy, and Cascade. I was thinking 2oz Zeus and 1oz each of Galaxy and Cascade. The beer will be bottled on Sunday afternoon/evening, so just shy of 3 days to DH. Beer is at 45*F right now, and I am going to take it out of the fridge to garage temps for the dry hopping since I have heard that fermentation temps are better for extracting the oils than fridge temps. Thanks for the help.

Three days isn't nearly enough to dry hop, especially such a big hop bomb. Consider bottling a week from Sunday. Also consider a smaller 2nd DH about 5 days before bottling - maybe 1oz each of Galaxy and CTZ.

You must dryhop at least 1 pound per gallon, minimum :grimacing: .
I have been dryhopping more lately. I keg, so this may not apply to you. I put them in a paint strainer with some marbles and tie off the end. Just drop them in, to blazes with that dental floss stuff.
Then I force carb by shake method and let it stand at room temperature overnight. Into the keggerator the next morning and there is quite a bit of dry hop character, probably from shaking.
I am not going to go as far as to say I extracted it all, but this has been working for me.
4oz in a IIPA sounds reasonable, depends on what you want I guess..

Thanks for the help so far. My only options at this point are to bottle this Sunday, dry hop first, or don't. I wish I had the time to do a longer dry hop, but I will be out of town for awhile and back just in time for the beers to be all carbed up and ready to drink. I realize it is last second. I will be submerging them in the beer via nylon bag and marbles so they won't be floating on top.

You could put the end of your siphon tube in the hop bag, tie it up around the tube, and then cram it down into your secondary vessel. Then, force the beer through the hops in the bag when you rack, and pull the tube out. I don't know if that'd do anything, but the idea I guess is sort of the Randal effect. Sorry, that's all I can think of...I've never been in a situation where I only have three days to DH.

You will still get a good bit of DH aroma, not optimal but no reason to worry. It might end up a bit cloudy but hopheads don't care about that...

Yeah, it's already fairly cloudy from the 2 oz of hops @ 15, 4 oz WP, and 3 oz of hop stand @ 130*. I don't really care about a clear beer. Thanks for the feedback.

I hope everyone adjusted for the typo of 1# hops/gal. I try not to nit-pick but there's a big difference there:wink:

With that amount of late/end-of-boil additions, you're probably going to be ok on aroma with only a short dry hop.

Good to know. That's what I was hoping for. It smells and tastes awesome already. I just wanted to hit it with a little more aroma to carry through the bottle conditioning over the next couple weeks.
