I’m planning on doing a one gallon batch of a citra single hop, and I have 3lb of Briess golden light dry malt extract. Last gallon batch using DME it only called for 1lb and came out good but wondering if that’s kinda week the chef in me wants to add a little more meat to this wort! Also steeping some Simpson crystal light and caramel 10L
That will leave you with a monster beer in the end, which isn't a 'bad' thing. I'd hop the hell out of it with citra - shoot for like 120 IBUs and you'll have a big DIPA on your hands. Oh and pitch enough yeast. One pack of us-05 for a 1-gal batch should do the trick.
It depends on how big (gravity/ABV) you want the beer to be. Is there a particular commercial beer you'd like to emulate? Or an ABV you'd like to hit?
I have an ounce of citra? and 11.5 gram pack of us-05 probably pitch close to three grams? Also plan on using 7 grams of that citra for dry hopping five days before bottle
Not wanting to emulate any other beer. I love DIPA style and hopefully dial in a recipe I can brew on a regular basis
How much liquid will your fermentor hold? Depending on how much more extract that you add to the recipe, you'll need to make sure you have enough head space to contain the krausen, or you'll need to use a blow-off tube.
I have a one gallon glass jug fermenter! I always end up using a blow off tube for the first 3 or 4 days. I’ve been getting a lot of pre made recipe packs from northern brewer, but just starting getting different ingredients recently to try and come up with my own recipes and have some fun with it!!
I'd do 1/2 oz of citra at 60 min and then the other half at flameout. Buy another oz and dry hop with 1/2 of that a few days before bottling, so like 2 weeks after brew day. I'm not too familiar with 1-gal recipes but I feel like you'll need more than 1 oz of citra for a DIPA. Pitch half the pack of us-05 for good assurance. Have fun, and if it all works out I'd look into brewing some bigger batches. Pretty much the same amount of work (and time), and more beer!
Awesome thanks for the advice! I appreciate it!! And slowly working up to getting the equipment for five gallon batches! Cheers I’m excited for this brew!!!
I use this to determine OG based on how much DME/LME Im using and it even gives you an ABV estimate. It looks like using 3 pounds of DME in a one gallon batch will give you a huge beer, so if you're wanting to hit closer to the 7% ABV range, you might consider cutting back on your extract. Cheers
