I had a high ABV barrel aged beer the other night and noticed my rDev for that beer was negative.

In general I tend to feel overpowered by big beers. So I got curious and looked at my ratings for high ABV beers. Went to "Your Beers" and sorted by ABV. For the top 50 beers (by ABV) I had 6 that had a positive rDev (12%). Stats don't lie. I don't like the big stuff as much as the next guy.

It seemed like an interested outcome. Wondering what other people see.

20+ and 5 break evens. (so between 40-50%, depending on how they are counted)

I guess one's definition of high ABV is subjective. I can live all day in the 8% - 10% range with the wide range of double IPA's that hide the booziness well. Since I can live in this range comfortably, I do not consider it to be High ABV. Generally, when I get over 10%, my appreciation tends to scale back. But someone else might consider 8%-10% to be high ABV. So its all relative.

14 out of 19. the other 5 were lower than the norm. Not sure that tells me anything except beers I like and the beers I dont like, i tend to really like or really dislike. I judged it based on 8% and above.

Most of my higher ABV ratings here are break-even or positive, percentage-wise it may be a little skewed though because I'm only mediocre with how up-to-date my ratings/reviews are on here so I only have like 20 brews entering double-digit ABV. In general I'm getting more into big beers so I suppose it will even out.

I just sorted my beer by ABV and picked the top 50. I guess if you have a hufe sample size of high ABV then your bottom would be 12%. With a lower sample it would be much lower. For me it was 8.5% at the 50th beer.

Out of the top 50 (all 11% and up) I have 28 (3 break even). I like big beers and I cannot lie! You other brothers can't deny:stuck_out_tongue:

My highest ABV beer is 10% so i'll do 8%-10% as my "high abv" beers.

10 of the 15 have positive rdev. I tend to find that high ABV beers also pack a lot of flavour when they're done well but can really suck if not. I'm really not a big fan of that big "boozy" taste that some high alcohol brews give off.

I prefer my Beer's Gravity to be High. So 50 is my Final Answer.

looked at my highest 50 beers, number 50 was a 10.5%, only 8 had negative rDev, one break even and the rest positive

Wow, this was quite an alarming search I did. . I've had probably close to 75 beers that are 10%+, and nearly 50 of them are in the positive range for rDev (as of typing this note, the only one voting for that spot). I have quite a few that are right at the 0 point, so on par with everyone else.
I guess I do tend to seek out and take more chances on 10%+ abv beers. Which goes along with my favorite styles being Imperial Stouts, Barleywines and Wee Heavys. I guess I just fancy all the different flavors that come along with those beers, I like that warming "boozy" feel (I tend to enjoy these beers more in the cold winter months of MI). I feel I tend to enjoy the more "Malty" beers, than I do the "Hoppy" beers, though there are some definite gems in the Hop department.

Interesting poll, I was surprised on my lone stance as of this moment at the top.

Well look at that, in the time I took typing my comment, someone else voted with me at the top.

Using 10% ABV as the cutoff: 21 beers with a positive rDev; 6 negatives; no break-evens.

That being said, there are a handful of other beers that come in just shy of 10% ABV that I would still consider "big beers" - given that they are marketed as "imperial" styles and their ABV falls around the 9.5% mark (i.e. the Yeti series)
