I know this is a very personal & subjective topic but...In your opinion, how many beers consumed per average day is Ok & how many beers consumed per average day is too much. I'll use myself as an example: I'm going to be 66 yrs. old I'm in excellent physical & mental health I eat healthy I exercise regularly I don't drink & drive Today I will drink-1 Ellicotville Brewing Mowmaster, 1 Otter Creek Copper Ale, 1 Founders Centenial IPA That's pretty much what I consume most days. Yesteday was 1 Otter Creek Copper Ale & 2 Southern Tier Phinn & Matts. Of course the beers will change & there will be events where I consume more but that's about it. Thoughts??
Don't mean to be rude but wouldn't it be wise to ask your doctor this question rather than 100's of complete strangers on a beer website? There is a lot of great info and feedback on this site but answers to health related questions from complete strangers is not part of that great info.
It's really about how it makes you feel. If drinking the amount you drink starts to bother you then cut back. If you feel healthy then what's wrong with enjoying good beer every night? I know I do, I'm more concerned about the cost of it though. I've been spending way too much money on beer lately but homebrewing is finally starting to help cut down those costs. Anyways to answer your question I think it's up to the individual to decide what amount of beer a night is right for him/her. For me I try to limit myself to 3 a night at the most. More often than not I go above that limit though. It's to the point where I feel like it's hurting my life. So for me I'd say 2 a night is my new limit. I just have to adhere to it which is turning out to be a lot harder than I expected. I always have a damn excuse to go over it.
I don't think he is asking for anyone to examine his prostate. It is a simple question posed to gain insight on others opinions, that is all. I don't have a set limit. Sometimes it is none, sometimes it is 6. It all depends on the day and how I am feeling. In my opinion, it starts to become too much when your drinking starts to affect your performance at work, your relationship with loved ones, and when you feel like you absolutely NEED to drink to feel good. As long as you're healthy, exercise regularly, and respect your limits, I don't see why 2-3 a night is too much for some individuals. I don't exercise as much as I used to, so I always take that into consideration, haha.
Well you are going to be 66 so I think you know how to moderate because you are still around and healthy.
The only true yardstick for an addiction to anything is the actual need for it. If you drink beer because you like it or even for the sake of the alcohol buzz, you're still golden. If drinking makes you feel normal: bad stuff going down right there.
Hi Rback, I'm 58. I'd say you're consuming about 1.75 oz/day of alcohol, which is about my upper limit when I splurge. Most nights I drink between 0.75 and 1.25 oz, generally a single pint. I do a lot of reading, history, and if I were consuming 1.75 oz/day it would impair my reading and comprehension. I find at about an ounce/day there are no issues. The kNIGHTLYpint.
Well as long as your not slamming them back to back, who cares. and If you are and your in a safe place who cares? time and weight is what matters, age is a factor. I mean when your in your 20's you can get drunk and work the next day, sure you feel like shit, but you can power through it. at 40 its harder, at 60 plus I cannot do it, nor do I want to. of course I never drank to get drunk myself, but I did and do drink for the buzz, the taste, the enjoyment, etc. Stop worry about it and have fun with it. Your only hurting yourself as my mother would say. still I drank more than 4 beers may times, not an issue. Time is the big factor. in fact I am on my 2nd dupont 750 today, and I feel fine.
I though it was obvious that I wasn't looking for health advice but was trying to stimulate discussion about this topic. Sorry if you thought otherwise.
I apolgize, didn't mean any disrespect, seemed like you were asking if what you were drinking was ok (normal) health wise so maybe i misunderstood.
I don't think 2-3 is too much. That's about what I do over the course of about 4-5 hours. More if it's a weekend and I'm not going anywhere. But you nailed it on the head with your opening statement "I know this is a very personal & subjective topic...".
I dont think 2-3 beers a night is bad, I tend to drink in spurts. I will go a week not having a beer at home. Then I will drink a bomber a night for a week. All depends on how I feel and what I have in the beer fridge. When I go out to my local WOB I tend to have maybe 5 at most. But thenagain, I'm a big guy 6'4 and close to 400lbs. so make your own conclusions. Oh and my Doctor (whom I played college football with) calls me the healthiest fat man he as ever seen. I tell him its the beer!
As with all alcohol in-take (aka -medical) concerns, please seek professional advice vs. posting on BA. Thanks.
