I couldn't agree more! But by the time I get to VA or Philly and back home that rare beer is always compared to another beer I've had! So I don't hunt the "rarez" I let them find me.

Of course, I'd love to be able to get Black Note or KBS at a local MD store one day. I'm even considering voting for Larry Hogan in the hope he'd clear some of these nonsense beer regulations... :grimacing:

Why do they clearly and deservedly demand a higher price tag? If you're answer is "supply and demand" then sure, I'm on board. Many people want specialty or one off beers but supply is limited so prices go up. Fine, I get it and I agree. The basic premise of your argument however appears to be (correct me if I'm wrong) that you drink rare or specialty beers because you're palate is too refined for shelf beers. Does making a beer rare really make it taste better? Don't get me wrong, I like to find rare beers as much as the next guy but here's the thing… many are good but some suuuuuuuck! So I do drink the rare stuff but I'm not so enamored with rarity that I think all whales are better than shelf beer. Is your palate too refine or are you too conditioned to think that rare=better taste?

I don't care how rare it is, or where it comes from. If you enjoy it, drink it........ I will never write off a beer simply because it is readily available.

I drink Whales as they come. But generally I only drink fresh IPA's. I have my usually spots. I know all of their stock better than they do. So, technically I drink shelf beer. But ONLY fresh Double and Triple IPA's when they come in. Over a month is too old.

I dunno about you guys, but I only store beer stacked in the fruit and vegetable crisper at the bottom of my fridge; obviously, because they are more like drawers and much less like shelves. God forbid having to take them off of a shelf again; once at the store was quite enough.

The rarez/special releases from the breweries I purchase from are worth the price not because of the rarity but because of the quality...with some, but very few exceptions.

I avoided this thread for a while because I thought it was going to be another "Why do stores keep beer on shelves! Just install more coolers!"

I'm sorry I waited so long. It's better than I could have hoped. Reminds of the time when my girlfriend (now wife) knew some people (hipsters) who called basically anyone not in their clique 'normies'.

    Drink beer. People are ridiculous.

99.9%. The .1% is when the beer is stacked on the floor.

This is crazy. I'll never be too into beer to like stuff that I can buy on the shelves. Some of my favorites are shelf beers. Most of the local brewery stuff is all shelf beer. I really hate the term "shelf beer". Just drink and enjoy.

You sure have given high marks to a lot of the shelf beer you've reviewed so you must really really love the whalez!

Most seasonal brews are as good if not better the then limited/whales. Example; Sucks can ride with the big boyz. Secondly any IPA lover has to smash the limited/year rounds or they will be drinking nothing but old, diminished, stale beer unless they have access to Heady and Pliny on a regular basis in high quantity. I constantly change up the seasonals from multiple breweries, Carton and Kane being some of my go to breweries.

Liking beer and being able to dicern quality are two different things. At least you have one of them totally down.
