I just had the experience of changing my mind considerably about a beer, and updating my re-view and rating. I first rated Rampant IIPA in the very low 3's, because I thought it was too harsh, but....

I had a six pack. Since it was the only IPA I had, and still drinkable, I kept drinking it. It got a lot better. Not a champion, but definitely a contender.

How often does this happen to you? Do do it as a policy and try to avoid it? What factors lead to you changing your mind about a beer (assuming the first one was not a bad bottle)? Have I only beaten my taste buds into submission?

Essentially never, unless there is some obvious reason like an infection or bad bottle. If the latter is true, however, we try to avoid rating it in the first place.

Very seldom for something I didn't rate very favorably (i.e. less likely to buy again).

For annual releases and such, I'll re-evaluate from time to time. If nothing else it keeps my current ratings more up to date with my current palate, rating trends, etc.

I've changed my rating number when I updated a rating to a review. I've also revised some of my earlier ratings. But in both cases it was more that I have a more reliable "scale" now than I did at first, rather than my actual opinion of the beer changed.

If I'm drinking something I haven't had in awhile then I will see what I gave it originally and may update it. When I was new to IPAs my ratings were all over the place so there are several that probably require adjustment. Hoplsam and Abrasive, for example, are no longer the greatest things ever.

I have a number of beers. Mostly on the ones I rated when I first started using Beer Advocate. Two reason:
    1. I tried to follow the tasting guidelines
    2. My tastes have changed so much in the past 4 years, I find myself being more critical
There are some beers that I like to rate at least once a year. Looking to see if something has changed, not so much in my taste, but in the quality/consistency of a particular beer

I do change my ratings at times. If I get to a beer and it seems different from what I rated I will usually stick with the higher number. I assume that if it is not as good now I got a bottle that was different due to storage or that my perceptions are different due to the many factors that can change your perception of the beer. I will lower the rating if I repeatedly get the same lower impression. I will routinely up the rating due to changing tastes. I always think my current thoughts are my truest evaluation.

It happens now and again to me if a revisit a beer that I haven't tried in a while and my palate's matured, and also as my frame of reference increases.

I do it rarely for beers that I rank as either really high or low. I tend to use my reviews to give myself reminders of rough first impressions of the tastes of the beer. If I try a beer and it tastes remarkably different later, I will make a mental note, but will most likely not re-review the smell, mouthfeel, and more.

I don't really re-rate; I'll either add on to a review (if I think I didn't do well enough the first time, or if my experience changed) or add a full review when I've only given a numerical score.

My best example would be the Abyss, which I initially just rated, and then went back to do a review when I had a different vintage and completely different experience.

I do it occasionally since Beer Advocate seems to change its rating process a few times a year. Off the top of my head it went from 0.50 increments to 0.25 to precise back to 0.25. So it's usually my first couple hundred ratings or so that I'll take a look at. Obviously your reviews get better, but I don't touch those. Occasionally I'll wonder if I really thought that beer was that good and maybe re-rate it, but not too often in that regard.

When I re-rate, I generally record the old score at the bottom of the review, add on a section for the "new" review, and then update the scoring categories to reflect my new review.

EDIT: I do this anytime I revisit a beer that I have rated but haven't had in the past year or longer.

I don't re-rate often, but when I do it's because its a beer that I don't have widely available to me, yet I've had it 3-4 times and I feel like it gets better/worse.

I will rarely go back and change my rating on a beer unless it is a significant change. Some of my reviews are 10+ years old and I laugh when I go back and read them. I kind of enjoy seeing how much my tastes have changed since then. If I do change anything, I'll keep the old review and add some newer notes onto it.

If what I would currently rate the beer is noticeably different than my original rating then I will. Beers and palettes change so I believe it's fair. For example, if this year's KBS is much better than last year's for some reason, it would be fair to rate again

I've gone back and fiddled with the scores on a couple of my reviews, but so far haven't completely re-done any of them.

Of course, I've only been drinking beer since September 2014 and didn't start doing reviews on here until a while after that, so that might change in the future.
