I've started trading lately and have had quite a few successful trades but I was curious on how often people get burned? By that I mean, didn't get what they agreed upon or didn't even get the shipment?

I guess I'm a pretty trusting soul so I haven't had a problem with shipping first but with people asking me to ship first I'm guessing people aren't as trusting?

I've been burned once in 100+ trades. Hope he enjoyed the 12 bottles of Breakfast Stout and 3 year vert of KBS!!
People are asking you to ship first? How many trades have you done?

I've only had it happen in BIF's but had 1 trade with the wrong bottles but that was taken care of. I once mixed boxes up and sent them to the wrong people, nice guy even sent it to the right place for me.

6-7 trades, all in the last couple weeks. Not a big history so I understand. I haven't been too worried about being burned but the thought has crossed my mind.

After maybe 150 trades, I've never actually been "burned". There have been understandable mix-ups on occasion (Westy 12 instead Westy 8, etc), but never a situation where I've personally been completely screwed over.

It's fairly uncommon, but it does happen from time to time.

Since you've been a user for less than a month, it would be standard procedure to ask you to ship first (regardless of how many trades you've completed) until you've built up a reputation in the community.

I have no been burned yet but I haven't done nearly the mount of trades as some. I bet it's more so you being new to the site rather than the amount of trades. The number one problem is new traders getting in over their heads. Trading becomes very expensive real fast doing multiple a week. Just keep aware of who your trading with and check references.

I believe this is called the Bitzy Effect.

It's rare. Don't take offense to people asking you to ship first. It's less a matter of trust and more a matter of the reality that noobs are much more likely to flake out on a trade than a vet.

Also, it often doesn't start out as being malicious, but people get in over their heads and ignore the problem. For example, 6-7 trades in your first couple of weeks is an awful lot. Some people are fine with this, but plenty of others in the past have gotten in deep with 5-10 trades right off the bat then just said "fuck it" and ignore them all and leave the site with basically no penalty to doing so.

Once a trader has a long profile with good partners, there's a lot at risk by burning bridges. Vets do flake out on occasion, but it's much more rare.

I'm not complaining about shipping first, I have no problem with doing it. I'm not sending $200 in beer so I'm not too worried. I was more curious if people get burned and if it was more of missing the box completely, not the agreed upon trade but still got an equal trade or maybe you didn't get the agreed upon beers and the replacement was not really acceptable.

And if anyone I've traded with so far or have trades in progress with I don't want you to take this personal. I have got everything agreed upon and more and quite a few people were very generous.

You're more likely to get burned by a new trader than a veteran trader.

You're more likely to receive nothing than get an equivalent or partial box.

As well as checking references, you can always take a look at the Bad Traders list on occasion to be sure. Most people on here simply never got a box.

    Helpful. Didn't know that existed.

Like I said from the beginning, I'm not worried about being burned. Even if it happened I would still trade. Too much good beer to still get my hands on.

After 80-100 trades and BIF's I've never been burned. Had 1 box take a LONG time to get to me but it eventually did, and had 1 overseas trade have bottles break but he re-sent the key item so we worked it out.

Yeah the problem is that not enough people report the bad traders. So sometimes they have time to screw over a few people before they are actually "outed"

Yeah I'm the same on that. Trades are awesome but I do them one at a time. When my box makes it and I receive my share then I move on.

Over 50 trades and never any problems. Someone seems to get burned about 3-4 times a month, but out of the volume of trades that's a pretty low rate. Plus the number of times someone TRULY gets burned is pretty low, because a bad trader thread usually either makes them make good, or some generous BA steps in to help.

Trust the people you trade with only after you've vetted them by talking to their references. Being trusting is a great character trait. Being wise is even better.

I am a new trader, I list trades on my info page. I generally only trade with people with history, I wouldn't trade with a newbie ( like me ). lol

I'd do a $20 trade with a new trader at the most, unless they shipped first - and I wouldn't ship until receipt. I sent out a $100 box ( with shipping ) myself to an established trader while he waited for it. It sucks, but it's the only way to gain rep.

An example would be YoniWolf who still hasn't been placed in that list by anyone he screwed over.

He can't be added if he's not reported. That's the problem.
