should we also give each other a $20 bill so we can claim we exchanged "extras"?

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I thought that "IP only" meant either they need something quickly or they're too lazy to bubble wrap some bottles, package them into a box and drop them off at a shipping store.

When your UPS bill for the month is $300, sometimes you chill out and do some IP trades. Wouldn't call it laziness.

California needs more FedEx. There are like 10 UPS locations for every one FedEx.

Furthermore, I think the case you stated is an outlier.

not really. IP trades are awesome because you don't need to spend an assload of money putting a bunch of extras in the box or expanding a trade to make the shipping cost worth it. sending a 15 pound box which is about 4x 750ml plus packing material is about 20-25 bucks with a fedex account. that's not insignificant.

I did an IP trade once - Natalie Portman was the other trader. You missed out.

I make local IP trades all of the time. We usually meet at a local brewery and swap bottles. It usually involves another local BA who has a limited release (Shaggy, Silva, Alesmith, CFH) that will swap for other beers.

No, the code for that is "bottle share at the Ramada". I won't make that mistake again.

no i haven't, but that's not the point. the point is that shipping is expensive and the advantage of IP trades is not having to pay shipping costs or extras or massive trade expansion to make shipping worthwhile. plenty of trades can happen IP even for stuff that isn't distroed in an area. hell, in chicago, in the past month alone i've traded IP (with chicagoans, no less) for heady topper, furious, and beatification b5.

I will only trade in person because I'm not comfortable with the questionable legality of mailing beer across state lines. And I'm lazy. But mostly the legal thing.

Not really that hard to do....if you ship 3+ boxes a week and they involve > shipping to more than 2 time zones away and/or are 15+ lb boxes. You could hit $300 in a month easy.

That's because you live in Chicago, the home of a boatload of beer traders who ship for their trades. Doing an IP trade and refusing to do a shipping trade are not the same thing. Read my original sarcastic post, where I clearly stated "IP only".

I was pointing out that his number of trades and how many he has marked as IP, which would indicate that he does not have $300 UPS bills. I originally indicated that people who only do IP trades because they're taking a break from $300 UPS bills are outliers.

Holy shit, rough Wednesday crowd. One sarcastic about IP only trades really got everyone riled up. You'd think I was trying to trade a yellow bus or something.

Quite the contrary....I was just pointing out that $300/ month shipping is not hard to do. In fact, shipping costs are usually why I take a break myself....

If I ever allow myself to get up to $300 in one month for shipping alone, I'm going to punch myself in the face and balls.

For the average trader I'd think $300 a month would be quite hard to do. That is a hell of a lot of shipping
