I got a Sierra Nevada porter from work the other day. It has a blue label and has labels only on one side( new ones have labels on both sides). The only codes I can see looks like 318 but I have no idea what year. The weird thing for me is after I popped the cap off I went in for a little whif and noticed its a twist off. I didn't know they ever did twist off caps. But anyways if anybody knows more than I do about this bottle might know about how old it is. Maybe Sierranevadabill will chime in? Oh yeah and tasted different. Not in a bad way exactly but I got a big kind of vanilla flavor from it. No hops at all just sweet dark malts and vanilla. My girl and I both thought it tasted different and she drinks more dark beer than I do.
But I want to know what all you other BA's think as to about how old this porter could be. Thanks and cheers.

Might help if you posted a pic of the bottle.

Pre-2007. That's when they switched over to pry-offs.

ETA: they had the blue label for the longest time, and switched those in the mid-2000s, too.

I'm on my cell phone still can't post pics but I used a pic as my avatar. You should be able to see it. If you can maybe you can see the date code, it's right there before net where it says net contents on the bottle. As to yemenmocha, Yes we do have quite a few old bottles on shelves here in Arizona but maybe 7-8 years? To bad I didn't stumble on a case;-)

    My favorite comment is
"I’m still waiting for Sierra Nevada in cans. (And no, I’m not being sarcastic.)". I do hope that California Pete is still with us and never gave up hope.

This post is super-old, but I just saw it today. In answer to your question, we changed Porter from a blue label to brown in 2009, and switched from twist-off to pry off in 2007. Short answer, pretty damn old! This was for sale somewhere? God help us.
