A local store put some hopslam on the shelf today. Bells releases it in january/February. Needless to say I didn't bother going down there (although I do enjoy that beer) There's no way it's got any hops left after 8 months... such a waste.

Yup. Prairie Pirate Bomb and Noir peak somewhere after 6 months old, and I won't drink an Orval that is less than a year old. But - have to watch coffee beers as some can degrade to green pepper beer in as little as a year.

Yup- the brett beers are what I was thinking of, but there are definitely others out there too.

Barleywines and Quads come to mind.

I hope you use a plastic tube or put your mouth directly on the spout. I'd hate to think you let it fall through the air and get all oxidised on the way to your mouth.

I didn't like 90 minute fresh but am aging one for 18 months in hopes of better flavor and I like my IPA's fresh but there's exceptions such as DH 90 minute

I had a Shorts Goodnight Bodacious that was 6 months old the other night and was amazing. This is a DIPA barleywine that was so boozy and almost undrinkable fresh but got hoppier with piney flavors along with hints of coffee and vanilla 6 months later. Never seen a beer get hoppier with age til an aged Goodnight Bodacious and it's brewed with coffee. So aging all depends on the beer. Most stone IPA beers and NE IPAs will be awful after a month and a half but others get better.

Not sure where to ask this so I might be in the wrong spot. Did not find much else to post to

How are the bottle dates on Guinness read.....L6282gg002......is this a bottled on or best by? Does it read 2016 day 282?

If so I just screwed up. I bought an 18 pack of Rye, Milk Stout and Gold and for $12 I jumped. I put them in the fridge and now think I bought really old beer. I guess the stout will still be ok

Any info on my date query?

    Thanks

Bottling date and yes, you got the numbers right.

From the Got Fresh Beer site:
Guinness: Uses a coded bottling date. The shelf life for Guinness is 10 months. The lot code will be listed as a number starting with L followed by four numbers, such as L1244, with additional digits. This would be the 1st of September, of 2011. In this example the first 1 is 2011, and the 244 is the 1st of September using the Julian date calendar.

It's ignorant to sit on that beer thst long, as it is it's a bit malty, I bet the hops are totally gone. Probably asking full price too.

If it was well made it will hold up. The only downside I have found is in some BA beers that have sat for a bit and do not exhibit their initial character. Otherwise no problems.

    Thanks

The Rye is almost without smell and very minor taste of anythig.....Golden ale is a nice biscuit malty sweet, not so bad reminds me of Fat tire. Not had the milk stout yet.

    Enjoy

As a drinker of cask ale,I am aware of the massive flavour benefits of a small amount of oxidation over a day or two.As a rule of thumb it is at its best two days after air is allowed into the cask.

Last Sunday I went to my favorite beer store and there were 4 bottles of world wide Stout, bottling date 11-16!I bought one for 10.99 and it was delish, but an 8 month. Old hopslam I would avoid too.

I prefer bottled on dates. Let me know when the beer has been bottled/canned, and then I can do the calculation as to whether I want to purchase or not.
The oldest beer in my cellar right now is a three-year old Russian River Consecration. I'm going to hold it until it reaches 5 years as suggested by Russian River. I also have a few other beers with two or more years on them but I've noticed through experiment that most cellar able beers are best around 2-3 years. I've had Bigfoot at 5 years, it was incredibly smooth but lacked a lot of flavor compared to Bigfoot at 2-3 years.
