I am searching for a chest freezer to use for a keezer. I need to know how tall a Corny Keg is so I make sure the inside dimensions are big enough to fit 1 keg. Thanks in advance!!
Pinlock are 22”, but you probably want a minimum of 3” more for the connectors. Ball-lock are taller, but as I don’t have any, I don’t know by how much. Cheers!
For old ball lock corny kegs, they are just a hair under 25". Plus connecting hardware, of course. For the newer corny-like kegs (from China, Italy, etc.) you might want to check the manufacturer/dealer specs. I'm not sure that they are all the same.
Pro-tip: Wait until you have the keg until you construct the collar. Almost any chest freezer is tall enough for a corney after the collar is attached. If you make the collar tall enough you will also be able to use the space over the compressor. That hump is useful refrigeration space for conditioning a keg, or even a second dispense. But you will need a collar that is tall enough to accomodate. Cheers
Amateur tip: My keezer ended up with a conventional 2 x 6 for a collar, so it added 5.5" to height. This allowed a pair of 3 gal Italian kegs to sit on the hump and line up exactly with the tops of the 5'ers. Be wary of adding too high of a collar 'cause you're going to be lifting a full keg (53 lbs) over and the empty slot is always in the middle-back (remember you have a row of faucets in the front so you attack from the sides). Oh yeah, you're lifting with one hand while the other hand is holding the lines out of the way. Also, spend the extra 2 bucks and go pressure treated.
I have not measured them, but I have a collection of pin lock kegs that feature 3 different heights. It's possible that one is a converted ball lock. If you are ordering kegs, call the vendor and get measurements.
