While reading this thread: http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...extract-tap-vs-distilled.242264/#post-3108858 I got to wondering at what point do you add the tablets? My usual process is this: Steep/mash grains in a bag, in an appropriate amount of water for the specified time. Then add the rest of the water (tap water) to get my pre-boil volume, get it nice and hot, dissolve extract and go from there. At what point should I be adding the tablets...I've bought some last time I was gathering my ingredients but wasn't sure so I left them out.
Add campden before you do anything else, i.e. before you heat the water. You want to get rid of the chlorine/chloramines before any other compounds (from your ingredients) that could react with them are introduced.
not sure if other do this, but to speed up dissolving, I crush the campden tabs before adding to water to treat. Otherwise it takes a while.
I get all my brewing water in my BK and toss in a campden tablet then night before I brew, that way when it's time to heat the water the campden has had time to remove all the chlorine.
I dumped the pill bottle into my coffee grinder. I now have a bottle of powder. I know that an aspirin sized campden tablet is good for 20 gal. A pinch is good for 5.
I take half a tablet and crush it between two spoons, add it to the water before dilution (distilled) and heating.
