So, I did a quick search on this, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I am sure it is out there though. My question, is how is the Top 250 list on this page created? I assume it was based on user reviews and an accumulation of the scores (i.e. Heady Topper has an average of 4.7 earning it the #1 ranking). I then assume that maybe there is a minimum number of reviews needed to qualify, to avoid someone putting up Joe's Piss Homebrew with one review of a 5 getting the number one spot.

So, if this is the case, how come Mexican Cake, made by Westbrook with an average score of 4.32 and over 300 reviews not on the list, when Peg's RARE DOS or whatever it is called makes the list with a same score but less than half the reviews?

I am sure the criteria is on here somewhere, I just couldn't find it quickly. Thanks in advance for any replies!

    Cheers!

    (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

    where:

R = average rating for the beer
v = number of votes (ratings) for the beer
m = minimum reviews required to be considered (currently 100)
C = the mean across the current list (currently 3.77)
But enough nerd talk. Let's drink a beer!

Criteria is at the bottom of the Top 250 Beer page. Basically it's a weighted average.

    How was this list calculated?

Lists are generated using a Bayesian estimate that pulls data from millions of user reviews (not hand-picked) and normalizes scores based on the number of reviews for each beer. The general statistical formula is:
    weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

    where:

R = average rating for the beer
v = number of votes (ratings) for the beer
m = minimum reviews required to be considered (currently 100)
C = the mean across the current list (currently 3.77)
