Again I am new. I'm starting small. Just purchased a case of Pliny the elder last night at the brewery with a few of their sours. And am willing to trade for some. I really want to get my first trade going and need to know what are some good trades for Pliny. I have read the forums but my question is because I am so new what would I ask for? I know it's all based on preference, but I don't want to sound like an ass because I am learning. Any suggestions on how to make sure both people get a good share?
Pliny for Heady is the most common one you'll see. So if you're interested in Heady, you could start there. You can also go to the ISO:FT forums and search Pliny and see what kind of trades people have posted to get a better idea. I recently traded for some Pliny with Jester King non fruited sours, so I think it's safe to say it will trade for other good, limited shelf beers.
I didn't mean to sound greedy by any means. I just want make sure my trade is done well on their side. Having said that I'm a huge fan of sours, barrel age stouts, stouts, double IPA but am also willing to venture to other different beers to get a well roudnd palet.
I began trading in the last month or so. I think a good way to start is just doing locals for locals trades. Basically you agree on bottle count (or maybe price) and send someone beers that aren't available in their distro area. I figured that was a good way to build up experience and reputation
You don't need to trade to get "a well roudnd palet". Drink local. You live in one of the best states for beer in the country.
Everything...get everything. Trade for styles that you like then use local beers to enhance & expand your palette. I'm not a big sour fan so I have no interest in trying to trade for Upland, Bullfrog or DeGarde. I would hate giving up what it would take to get these sours even if I sort of liked them.
I got into trading because I was/am going after the Top 250 beers. It's been a lot of fun using that as a goal tracking them down locally and trading for those I couldn't. I still have a way to go, but I don't think there's a better set of beers to go after than that list. With your beers, you can get a lot of the easier sours, pale ale, and IPAs on that list. Good luck!
I didn't think you sounded greedy, I just thought you were coming at this from the wrong angle "what's a fair trade (without even talking about what beers you're interested in)" vs. "I would really love to try xyz, what is a fair trade" the trade is just the means to the end
just post what you are looking for or what you want. there is always someone out there that is more than willing to trade. i've seen pliny trade for various things along with the sours, so your best bet is to post and believe me someone will tell you if you are reaching.
Awesome! Thank you everyone for all the wonderful feed back. I defiantly know that I would be into trading our local beers for others local beers so I can try everything. And yes i guess I am pretty lucky to live in this area the beers are pretty amazing. Literally live Down The way from Sante Adairius one of my favorites.
One good thing to add is to not overdo it for your first trade. Keep the first trade small and simple to make sure it goes smootly and you build a good reputation. But as others said, starting with local for local is a good way to go (thats how I started), unless you have something in mind that you want to try. Just post an iso:ft. Pliny (and other RR stuff) can get you some solid brews. Good luck and welcome to BA trading!
