My husband is turning 40 and I'd like to surprise him by stocking our garage fridge full of beer. He's always showing me pictures of posts from our local beer group if their fridges filled with beer. Any suggestions on balancing different kinds of beer? We mostly drink IPA's, Pales, Porters, and Stouts. Thanks!

get him a little bit of everything he likes. i'm sure he drinks a few specific things more than others. for me, i'd be 75% IPAs and 25% everything else especially with the summer upcoming.

guys are pretty simple, filling the fridge with good beer would be a great gift.

If he (and you) are still experimenting by trying different brands of your favorite styles, then get a variety of your favorite styles, but from breweries that you have yet to try. However, if there are some breweries' beers that you know he likes, mix in some extras of those. Lastly, if he has mentioned that he'd like to try something that neither of you have tried yet, here's the opportunity to get some of those.

I feel like I should respond since I turn 40 in two weeks and I just stocked my garage beer refrigerator for Father's Day then my birthday the same week. It would be hard to suggest anything specific for AZ so I will just describe what I did: BA Darkness for my first beer on my birthday, Trooper Porter since Maiden is touring the States, a KBS for Father's Day then primarily fresh IPA's and Pale Ales - Stone Enjoy By, Ghost Hammer, Beer Hates Astronauts, DDH Psuedo Sue and IPAs from Minneapolis where I was born and Green Bay where I live. Then some New Glarus Berliner Weisse. To me it is a work of art that reflects me and I look forward to posting about that refrigerator being emptied on WBAYDN.

I had clients who were huge craft fans (me too - so we had that in common).

When we closed on their home, I filled their fridge with craft beer.

I included some local staples that I know you dont have in AZ. But I also included Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Founder B'Fast Stout, Stone basic IPA, and some bombers. These all made good "fillers" inbetween the hyper-local and rare items I included.

It was a nice touch & theyve sent me more business. :grinning:

Screw balance. Just get him the best IPAs on the planet.

Fresh ipa and pale ales are great in the summer. I also like Vienna lagers and Helles lagers (Samuel Adams) in the hot weather.

A work of art that I am jealous of. And I love the New Glarus Strawberry Rhubarb photo bombing all the amazing IPAs.

First learn balance. Balance good, karate good, everything good. Balance bad, might as well pack up, go home.

Or look at my avatar pic.

IPAs are definitely our goto for the summer! This is not a bad idea.

I would go with fresh IPAs for the summer, get his local favorites or maybe items he always talks about. Maybe you can get ideas on a few wish list beers he always wished to get, etc. and see if you can locate a couple.
    Cheers:slight_smile:

I joined Beer Advocate a few years ago when I had a Fresh Squeezed. It sparked my interest in IPAs and it led me though a path of finding a love for craft beer in general. I will always have a fond memory of Fresh Squeezed for that. Your post reminded me of this because years ago I asked for advice here on Beer Advocate about what IPAs to try. Someone from Santa Rosa sent me a Pliny the Elder along with a Swami's IPA (which is available now to us in AZ). Unfortunately, since I was so new to IPAs, I don't think we could appreciate it like we could now. So the whole reason for my response is it got me thinking that maybe I should try to get a Pliny again now that we could truly appreciate a great IPA. We do have some fantastic local beers here as well, but your post got me thinking of some that are out of our reach. So thank you!

Great idea! You're an awesome wife, and I hope he appreciates it! My recommendation would get him a mix of things you know he already likes, (the old standby favorites) and then throw in some new things he might like.

Your amazing selection makes me think I should look into beer trading! I would love to try some of those. Anything from The Alchemist.

Packs of his favorites, then a bunch of singles of beers he hasn't tried. Does he like hefeweizens? Also a good summer beer.

If you're looking for what's available right now, locally there are some decent options. AZ Wilderness just released Big Guy Rye DIPA, may still have DHW 8 in cans, and Refuge is always good. McFate may have some cans at the South location, Fatality is great. You would be able to get good Crowlers filled at The Shop (Church Music, maybe they still have Bingo Bango Bongo with Modern Times) or Wren House (Wrenovation).

As far as shelf beers, definitely get all the Modern Times beers you see (Orderville, Black House, Drop Art, Dymaxion, Lomaland, Booming Rollers, Fortunate Islands, Blazing World, and I haven't had it, but Oneida should be out soon). There may still be some Todd the Axe Man at Total Wine, though it will be a few months old by now. Dragoon IPA and Tower Station are great local, canned IPAs. Mike Hess Solis, Firestone Walker is coming out with their new DIPA soon. Born Again Yesterday is still tasting good to me.

There's my rambling list of suggestions.
