I used that term long before microbrews/craft beer. Guess I (still) make people's skin crawl. Excuse me while I go quaff my thermos of iced tea (no beer til my break)..

Hated the article and everything in there is insulting. What a prick this little sh** author is. No one talks like that and while I usually avoid Corona especially when I'm not in Mexico the whole:

I don’t drink fizzy, yellow beer.”
“I am a liar, and will prove it as soon as I run out of this saison.”

You know how I know that site "Thrillist" is complete tripe? I click on the ad at the top for "Catch up on your scotch knowledge" and I get at the top of the page: Six New Cocktails Courtesy of Johnny Walker Double Black. Thank you frat boys who run this site.

While you shouldn't take yourself too seriously (or your beer) I'm surprised to see the number of people who laud this article. There's nothing wrong with getting geeky about beer, especially when you know what you're talking about and are doing it out of enthusiasm rather than attention seeking. If you can tell the difference between a beer aged in French vs American oak, good for you! If you think you can tell what variety of hops were used by one sniff of a beer (seen it done), that's awesome. Maybe this article is just making fun of wannabe beer geeks, or maybe it's what beer geeks sound like to the author, but to support it broadly and into the context of making fun of craft beer is to make a mockery of the art and the people who study it. Just seems like a middle school bully trying to make fun of the science club.
That got a little too serious. Time for a beer!

I hear ya, I had a PBR just the other day at a birthday party because it was offered to me and I didn't want to be rude. It was half way decent. However, I'm not defending them. I just drank the darn beer on a hot day and it filled a want at the time. You wouldn't defend Taco bell as a company would you? That's the point I was trying to make.

Hahaha...Insulting? Wow...you have really thin skin. "Expaltive, expaltive"...the bell just rang and time to go back to class...I don't know anyone that talks like that but hey, I'm not a hipster.

Humor can sometimes get lost in these forums...if you are actually trying to be funny, then cheers!

The only things that grinds my gears the most is when people (used far too frequently in this forum) say "(beer name) is 'drinking well'".

For F sake, just say it tastes good.

And the science club would've been a lot cooler if they had learned the fine art of self-deprecation:wink:

I'm a history nerd too, and a sports trivia nerd, and so on. It doesn't mean I get butt hurt when my wife teases me for waxing rhapsodic about some obscure Civil War battle or the implacable facial hair of Rollie Fingers. People (@putonyourwalkingshoes) need to lighten up.

The 4 day old Hop Drop'n Roll was waaaayy better than the 5 day old one! It's true. Freshness as an obsession is an obsession. Smart folks know how to buy.

Any IPA: "That IPA was already two weeks old?! I had to DP that crap!"

Any unfamiliar style: "Ew.. that bottle was definitely infected. I had to DP that crap!"

While it is fair game to make fun of folks who enjoy as much hop aroma and delicate hop flavors that are possible only in uber fresh beers, I believe folks who make fun of us might be better served to wonder if they themselves are missing something that we get and really enjoy.

Any low ABV style that isn't sour or doesn't have the word "session" in the name: "Urgh - totally lacking in complexity. I had to DP that crap!"

No, not at all. Some use the words, others enjoy the beers. That 4 day old HD'nR was an aromatic blessing.

I do agree w/ you cavedave, but there's a point where the freshness thing gets pushed too far. I definitely try and get beers as fresh as possible. But sometimes I see posts on BA that are overkill. Some guy on here a few months ago was saying that 15 day old Sculpin was still very good, but that it totally drops off by day 16 and isn't worth drinking. Not exaggerating.

It's fine to say "beer X is best drank before it's more than 2 weeks old IMO"

But I don't believe someone can repeatedly spot a major difference between 15 and 16 day old beer. But maybe my palate is pathetically noob-like, or I'm not thinking about it hard enough when I'm tasting it.

I'm going to start using quaffable every chance I get.

    wiktionary defines it as "drinkable".

the collins english online dictionary defines it as : pleasant and easy to drink. esp. in large quantities.

and the webster online dictionary doesn't acknowledge it. they do acknowledge quaff: to drink deeply. first used in 1523. lol
