I found a pouch of powder in my home brew supplies, but the label fell off. I think it is maltodextrin but need to test it. I have read it is flavorless, so is there a way to tell?

If it's not sweet, chances are it's maltodextrin. What color is it?

How many bags of random powder do you have in your box of supplies?

    Taste it and see.

It's white. Just one back that is not labeled. Should it be sweet to the taste?

No, no sweetness. Should be kinda like the alkaline type of taste if you've ever eaten dutched cocoa powder or something like that.

If it tastes sweet, it should be only very slightly sweet. Otherwise pretty much flavorless. Corn sugar would be very sweet. DME would vary depending on type, but would be fairly sweet and also have a lot of malty flavor.

Its definitely not corn sugar or DME. I am pretty sure it is maltodextrin. I bought it 2 years ago to help a thin batch, but the label fell off. I may just cut my losses and by a new pouch for $2.

    Thanks for the tips.

Did you taste it? Anyway, if you know it's not corn sugar or DME, and you know you bought it to help a thin batch, that really only leaves maltodextrin.

    When in doubt.
    Throw it out.

^^^ Get a gravity reading if you'r really worried. I'd be adding half a pound of this to each batch until it's gone regardless of what it. Just don't use carapils alongside it and you should be fine.
