No I don't think I've ever seen those. Where I live there are 375 mL cardboard cartons and I have bought those. Generally though, with these alternative packages they only have the "standard" wines like a carbernet sauvignon, a chardonnay, a pinot grigio and a merlot so I'd feel like I was buying the wine for the package more so than the wine.

I don't think they are going to replace bottles just provide another option like how beers comes in both cans and bottles.

Remains to be seen I guess, it's possible. A nice pour is 6 oz, so the math works.

I scored the Underwood wines in CANs several years ago during a foray to DC just before a get-together with my mother & her siblings, Uncle Steve & Aunt Kathy + Kathy's husband, Uncle Ralph.

K&R were up to their usual BS, dissing me as though I were a rube. I was espousing CANned vs Bottled beers when one of them remarked, "Well, at least wine will never be sold in CANs."

I jumped up, proclaiming, "I KNOW this answer!" & returned, brandishing the three CANs in my possession, offering them a choice of Rosé, Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir.

The looks on their flabbergasted faces was priceless! I now give them a wide berth as I have better things to do than put up with dismissiveness.

That said, wine is going to be a harder sell in CANs than beer + they have a higher hurdle than Oskar Blue's Dale's PA with its CANparison to B/M/C. Further, I have to agree that commingling wine & beer solely based on serving style (CAN) would be a real mistake on any retailer's part. Never the twain shall meet.

I just looked at the wine isle at Meijer and they do have a couple of half bottles. It's actually been a couple of years since I've bought wine as I mainly only drink beer.

Not necessarily. Some of the canned wines (e.g. Infinite Monkey Theorem) are getting pretty good ratings. That said, I'm seeing a LOT of canned wines in markdown "discontinued" bins at bottle shops of late.

Anyway, I'm more concerned about crappy beers taking up shelf space (looking at you, Minhas).

The thing is that "wine space" as a whole still takes from beer and liquor. When Pennsylvania dropped the case law the supermarkets had entire sections dedicated to beer. Now when I walk in years later the original beer section had been cut in half and what happened to the rest of that space? Wine. It kind or ties into that thread on whole foods post Amazon buyout. But it is much larger than just one retail chain.

In NY beer and wine are sold in separate stores so it won't have as great an impact in my state. At least I believe it won't. "Wine products", such as wine coolers, are sold in beverage stores and supermarkets where beer is also sold, but only "liquor stores" can get licenses for selling wine and spirits for off premise consumption, and they cannot sell beer.

It will be like Wine Coolers.

They were BIG for a while but now you can hardly find one.

Honestly I'm more concerned about the 500 "artisan" Big Beer Ciders that are taking up space on shelves in my area. I guess somebody buys them, and I thought having to look at shandies was bad!

I see it in a handful of stores, but it's not THAT proliferate at present. The wine consumer is a different animal than is the beer consumer. There's a certain mystique with wine that isn't there with beer. Many casual wine consumers are still wrapping their heads around getting great wine with a twist-off cap, it'll be a while before canned (or boxed) wine becomes widely accepted. When I see cans of wine on the side of the road, I'll take exception. Until then, the demise of bottled wine has been greatly exaggerated and tree-hugging hikers and campers like beer much better.

We are in different age groups, so trust me when I say this. Girls my age want to either slap the bag or drink cheap wine in a can. It's definitely becoming a thing with my generation unfortunately.

Drunk girls can only increase the popularity of things so much. They're definitely one of the more frivolous demographics, though, and decidedly only interested in the "next big thing". Pun intended.

Though I sense you're joking, 64 oz. of wine is a little more than 2 and a half bottles of wine. I'm down, but that'd serious fuck up most people.
