I feel like I've seen a bunch of trade threads for this lately and it got me to thinking about how this is aging. Is the vanilla mellowing out? Is it still as sweet as it was a year+ ago? How is the barrel character meshing with the vanilla beans?

I've had it a couple times and only have one bottle left that I'll probably open sometime soon so I'm curious. Discuss.

I opened my last bottle about a month ago. I was worried the vanilla flavor would have totally faded, but it was still very strong (a bonus for me, as I love vanilla). I had one fresh as well, but my memory is fuzzy enough that it's hard to compare. It was pretty cloying, and a single pour was plenty for me, but I really enjoyed it. Again, the vanilla is very strong, but the barrel character and the beer are quite distinct, though they do take a bit of a back seat to the vanilla and pure bourbon flavors.

Ya, I agree the vanilla is still very prominent and up front.

I can't say enough about how good this is drinking right now...the vanilla melds into the base stout like a boss! There but not overpowering. It's about as perfect as a stout could drink in my opinion.

awesome. i loved it fresh so i'm expecting to still really enjoy the experience when i open that last one. i'd like to do it alongside a regular BCBS 10 as well so i can really pick up on the differences.

This exactly. Haven't had a taste since January, but it was just as good as my fading memory of it fresh. I wouldn't hesitate to trade for one or crack it open any time.

I am actually surprised that a certain few havent chimed in on how barrel aged beers are not supposed to be aged and it must have fallen off by now.
There is a thread where someone says Rare is tanking. Ridiculous.
Vanilla is still drinking as amazing as it was fresh if not better.

    Let me check...

...hmmm it's starting to taste like regular bourbon county. I prefer having it alone rather than having it side by side. I think it tastes better that way.

One and done for Rare I understand, but vanilla is not scarce like PVW barrels... I don't get why it's retired.

Apparently it was a huge mess to brew and clogged up the equipment. They don't want to deal with that again.

    It's true,
I just made a vanilla mead and the vanilla beans turn to snot in the fermenter - a gooey mess.
