I did not see a thread on this, but maybe I missed something. I was never impressed with their beers, although I thought Midnight Express was not bad. I visited the brewery once and the owners were friendly and even gave me a tour and some samples. Just thought I would share in case some people were not aware. Hate to see any brewery have to close, especially one in Iowa (homerism). Here is the link regarding the closing and the last post on the Hub City website is from February 2012. http://beerpulse.com/2012/05/iowa-based-hub-city-brewing-shuts-down/
It was pretty ugly apparently too. They lost the farm, literally. I feel really bad for everyone involved.
Their porter was actually very good, but nothing I'd reach for regularly. And I always wonder what the Other Side of the Story is when things like this happen.
I've been there a few times since my finance' grew up in Oelwein, IA and the brewery was about 15min from her place. Essentially, they spent a lot of money on expanding/buying brand new equipment without a firm market to sell the beers. Plus quality control was an issue. When I had their winter seasonal, Snow Bunny Ale, on tap last year at the brewery. It was a great cream ale with a touch of spice and Vanilla. Picked up a six pack at the brewery and it was still good. This season I picked up a six pack here in Roch and it was horrible. Same with the Oatmeal stout, just not good. Too bad, they were good people.
