Hey! So I may be going down to Florida for Spring Training this year courtesy of the parents. I'm from Minnesota so I've never had the chance of trying any Cigar City's offerings. The weekend we are looking at going is the same weekend as Hunahpu's Day. If I were paying for the trip then I would make that a must, but I'm not and my parents aren't huge fans of the beer scene. So my long winded question: is Hunahpu available in stores as well or would I actually have to go to Hunahpu's Day in order to get a bottle or 3? Also, Jai Alai is another I really want to find. Any other good suggestions from CC? Thanks for your help!
Hunahpu is only sold one day a year at Hunahpu Day. Jai Alai is great along with pretty much everything else CCB has to offer. Cubano should be releasing in Feb and there may still be some on the shelves in March. It's a favorite of mine.
To expand, you will only find Hunahpu at Hunahpu day like Brain said. You will have to line up with everyone and wait to get a wrist band in order to get actual bottles. If you just want to taste Hunahpu, you can come to Hunahpu day, get beer tickets and wait in line to get a taste. Otherwise, most Total Wines in the area carry CCB's shelf products like Jai Alai, Maduro, Florida Cracker, Jose Marti & Helles Lager. You can usually also find big bottles of some of there seasonal/occasional releases. You can also get a lot of their offering right inside the CCB tasting room onsite.
I too will coincidentally be in town for my bday that weekend from CA. Is there a pre-release party or anything me and my girlfriend need to purchase tickets for? What time do doors open? Is there a limit on bottles per person? One of my bucket list items is to try all the beers on BeerAdvocate’s top 100 list (3 of which are from this release). How many of the Rum, Bourbon, Whiskey, and Apple Brandy bottles will be released? Are they first come first served? Or is it something we have to win? Any additional info is appreciated. Are bottleshares welcome? If so, I assume CCB beers only? Also curious when Imperial Sweet Stout is released? I am looking very much forward to this event and appreciate any info you can give me. Cheers!!! J Apologies for all the questions. Just a long distance from home and want to be organized so my girlfriend doesn't kill me on my bday. ;-p
I'll try my best to answer this all in one go. No there is no pre-release party that you will need to buy a ticket for. Basically the whole day is one big party. You will likely need one wristband to get into the event (no cost, just to ensure everybody there is 21 or older) and one other wristband to purchase bottles (these are limited depending on how many bottles they make and what the limit is for this year). As far as pre-parties go, there was an event last year at Peg's the night before and I believe they're doing it again this year, although I haven't heard anything official. CCB opens at 11 which is when they start handing out tickets. Bottles don't go on sale until 3 or 4 (can't remember exactly off the top of my head.) The limit has gone down every year. Last year it was 2 bottles. If I had to guess I would think the limit will be the same this year but I don't think anything official has been said about bottle limits. Don't expect any bottles of the barrel aged versions. Each of those that you listed were only released in bottles once in the past and not on Hunahpu day. However I would expect a few barrel aged versions to be on tap at some point in the day. At least they have been in the past and I see no reason why that would change this year. CCB is pretty great about bottle shares, especially at events like this. Personally I've never felt the need to bring more bottles since the tap list is always awesome, but I've seen lots of people with coolers in the past and no not just CCB beers. Imperial Sweet Stout (I'm assuming you're talking about the cognac barrel aged since it was the only one that's been bottled) was released a couple months ago and is long gone now. You're best bet at a bottle would be to try to arrange an in person trade while there. There's also a chance that it will be on tap during the day but I don't know how much they kegged. Hope that helps Edit: Looks like someone beat me to it. Oh well.
Peg's has confirmed a Friday event. They have not said what will be tapped, but I'm pretty sure you will see an appearance by Rare or RareR, maybe even Funky if you get lucky. It will start at Noon and you should definitely be there by noon as they usually have some very limited taps for the early birds. http://tampabaybeerweek.com/ai1ec_event/cycle-barrel-aged-beer-tapping?instance_id=89
Thank you for the detailed info moose3285 . That is VERY helpful. I'm down for a bottleshare while there and IP trades (only going to be in FL once....might as well live it up :-)). Would love to bring someone's wants from CA to bottleshare.
most of the information posted applies to previous years, this year's may (and probably) will have some different stuff to consider, so keep an eye out for that
One thing I feel should be mentioned (and has countless times in other threads regarding this subject) because you mentioned the rest of the family is not into the beer scene. You really need to set aside the whole day. A. Because the whole day is awesome. And this is an all day event. B. Unfortunately, the days when you could just show up after 3 (2011 was the last year for that) and get your bottles are long gone. If you want bottles plan on being there at 10:00 at least.Or we all collectively decide to sleep in and hold one-another to this notion. I mention this because while those of us who enjoy beer festivals and releases love hanging out at events like this the whole day if your family is not into "the beer scene" as you noted you absolutely must find something else for them to do that day or it may be torture for them (FL heat and sun at this time of the year is a bit much even for Floridians) and then sadly subsequently for you as well. The International Mall is nearby so they may enjoy hanging out there or the Tampa Museum, or the Dali in St Pete. What I am saying is drop them off somewhere, bring sunscreen (or hit me up for some, we bring extra, because your Minnesota skin will fry), and enjoy. Moreover, where are you going for Spring Training?
We're all Twins fans so we'll be in Fort Myers, (I also go to school in Boston so we'll probably hit a Red Sox game too) but a two hour drive north and then hanging out all day and driving back probably won't fly with the parents. That's fine though, I've been to Darkness Day so I've had similar (awesome) experiences. The reason I asked is because Surly has Darkness Day, but then also releases a small amount to stores around the area. If you know where to look you can still snag a bottle or two at the stores. We always bring sun screen though, and aloe because inevitably we still get burned. I appreciate all the responses though! I hope you all have a great time there!
Between the beer and the food, I've already informed the wife that she will be picking up one FULL motherf'er that day!
I grew up 5 minutes from the Twins spring training. There is a Total Wine and World of Beer you can check out on Daniels. Literally 5-10 minutes from the stadium.
As someone who has been to Darkness Day (in 2010), it is fun but it is nothing like Hunahpu Day. The two are hardly even comparable they are so different. In fact, there were 4 of us who went to Darkness together who also hung out at Hunahpu last year. All of us have decided we will not miss Hunahpu Day (I am the only one who has been to all of them so far from the group). One of those 4 people live in Michigan and would rather make the effort to go to Tampa because of how much more fun it was. I am not trying to belittle Darkness Day. We would all love to go back. It is just not the same as going to Hunahpu. Hopefully they do not run out of food so early this time. Thank god for the pizza vendor still having something for our drunk asses to eat late in the day. It would be nice to know ahead of time if any of them will be there serving breakfast so we can avoid grabbing something from a fast food joint before getting in line.
