Right, they are not going to renew a club that generates about $200k in revenue because a few Internet beer nerds are pissed off and calling them names. Makes sense.

I think this thread title is perfect for a new beer to make things right. hunapocalypse barrel aged in Red Whine barrels. Wax it for extra whale points.

It's just optically really bad to restrict sales to your best customers and then have a free for all to the general public.

Perhaps you couldn't pick up on my sarcasm. But I guess that happens with text.

There obviously were a lot of problems with the event. But all the malfunctions began and escalated with the failure to protect the integrity of the admission credentials.

Let's see. I got an email from the brewery on Friday reminding me that I needed a ticket, or app on my phone, and my ID to get in. I got there late, with everything instructed. I was rather shocked when the ticket guy expressed surprise that my name actually matched the name on the tickets. How hard is it to manage that?

Then I go to get my tasting glass, except they are out. Offered a plastic cup instead.

Then I guzzle a couple of pours, go wait in line for bottles for over an hour, only to be told as I'm 2 people away from the front that they are out of bottles. Awesome!

I wasn't there but get the impression that extra tickets for this event were as close as someone's home computer printer or the local Kinkos? True?

Founders is doing a 5 day ticketed release of KBS requiring people to show ID with their ticket, no exceptions.

I went to Jester King Funk N Sour Fest last year. It was a ticketed event. You could even sell or transfer your tickets to someone else, but if you did, you had to go online and change the name of the ticket. Very simple solution.

Exactly. They would generate the revenue anyway just by selling the bottles in the tasting room to every average Joe that wanted to buy them, but getting that 200k up front allows them to buy more barrels, etc and really get the program cranking faster.

For people that went, I get that running out of Huna, super long lines, and overcrowding all suck. I also agree that CCB probably dropped the ball by selling the extra catador beers to the people who lined up early against their wishes. I do NOT get that 1500 catador members are pissed off because their trade value just went down on a release that was supposed to be exclusive. CCB doesn't have a clause in the catador agreement where they promise to uphold trade values. All Catador members got 2 guaranteed bottles of DB Huna (a big bonus over the one they were supposed to get) and didn't have to do anything but click their mouse a few times to get them. I think that's pretty good.

I very much hope that this "insult" of selling "rare" beer to regular "unworthy" people causes catador members to cancel their memberships (if CCB even bothers to do it again) because lots of other people would appreciate a bottle or two of each upcoming release and would gladly sign up.

I do think the sense of El Cat entitlement is a little out of control, and I wouldn't have batted an eye at them selling the extra DBH to anyone and everyone at Huna Day. We were never promised 100% exclusivity, trade values, or to get to keep all the best stuff to ourselves; also, unlike apparently a lot of people, I read plenty of "we still have more of this stuff" between the lines in the emails and information they let out about DBH, so I knew it was only a matter of time before it made it to the general public.

But. I think selling it BY THE CASE was dumb as hell, and I can't/won't believe no one realized that. All you're going to do is make 71 people happy and 1500 or so sorta-annoyed-to-really-upset. It's not like there was any risk of not offloading all the DBH with a 1-2 bottle limit, so do THAT. Because "click your mouse a few times to get them" is true. But we paid more than they were going for at Huna Day (Eventbrite fees) and we had to go pick them up. And each bottle had a different pickup window, so that's two trips. For those of us who don't live in that area, two three-hour-round-trips to pick up bottles wasn't NO effort. I know I'm talking about an EPIC first world problem here, but as a club member I put effort into getting my bottles, and had I ignored the "don't come early" request, I could have lucked into the world's easiest-to-obtain case of DBH right at the front gates. (I would likely have not given half a shit about getting regular Huna at that point, either. Peace out, the day has peaked. I'll be at Rapp if anyone needs me.)
