It's a combination of things that include: BFE location, strong local support, popular and/or bizarre styles, rarity, reputation of brewery, etc.

Most of the hyped beer is at least decent, most of it good, some great.

I laugh at some of these beers, but it is what it is, drink what you want.

Hype is weird. KBS had all this hype, it wasn't as good as BCBS IMHO.
Trading hype is weirder. Look at what people are trading for Fuzzy, it's probably really good but there's a ceiling somewhere. DB Huna trades have been insane too. I believe it's from people with much more beer in their cellar than they know what to do with who really want a specific beer. Everyone sees these crazy offers and it inflates the value.
I'm just glad I've got some really nice trading partners now, finally was able to land a Leon as a part of a bigger trade with a couple last snow growlers after everyone shit on my ISO. Now he's got first dibs on all my buddha stuff.

Heady came out of nowhere, it just usurped Pliny on the forums all of a sudden. I'm glad I tried it but it's not worth the hype IMHO, it seems to have calmed way down now though.

I hate that I have to agree with you here, lol

Would never have traded $100 worth of high-end Cantillon for this beer had I just listened to you in the first place, Tim

After having opened my BA Muy Bonita last night, I'm glad that I was able to get it via an IP trade for RareR Dos and not via a trade on the forum. BA Muy Bonita was very good but not worth what people are offering/wanting for it. There are better beers on the shelf. Of course, there are no other beers on the shelf that taste like BA Muy Bonita (so much cinnamon and vanilla!)

did BA Muy taste like apple pie?

Um...not to me. Not enough of an apple flavor to call it apple pie. But (and this might be my personal taste) I never really get a ton of "apple" flavor out of apple brandy BA beers. To me, apple brandy barrel aging imparts a different flavor. I'd more equate the taste of BA Muy Bonita to the flavor of the top of a cobbler. Lots of cinnamon and brown sugar to it. Here's how I summed it up on my beer groups FB page.

"Most pronounced cinnamon flavor I've ever come across. Really nice vanilla and brown sugar flavors too. A more subtle barrel flavor than I expected, more of a soft oak than the typical barrel booziness. Really smooth drinking. And sweet. Glad that I split the bottle with 2 other guys, not sure I could have drank the whole thing myself."

After tasting it, I don't regret having traded 2 RareR DOS and 2 BCBS for 2 BA Muy Bonita in an IP trade. But I also don't regret trading the extra bottle of BA Muy Bonita on the trade forum.

thanks for the detailed tasting note. a friend has a bottle for me, we just haven't finalized what he wants for it so this helps me know where I'll draw the line

I really feel hype train is a train that can take all of the hype.
