You are not an alcoholic if you are able to drink when you want and not drink when you've decided not to. It might be that simple. If it's not negatively affecting aspects of your life, it can't technically fall under the definition of a disorder, which alcoholism is.

If 2-3 on the weekend makes you an alcoholic, then I think a lot of us here are in a whole world of trouble. 1st meeting at my house, I'lll supply the home brew! Cheers!

If that rate of drinking makes you an alcoholic, I died of a combination of heart disease and cirrhosis many, many years ago.

Please tell the world my story.

I've done extensive research and have yet to find anything in the bible saying "don't drink". Yes, there were circumstances where God didn't permit drinking, such as the Nazarites (Jesus was a Nazareen), but if this were the case then Jesus himself would have broken his own rules. In my research I found countless verses warning of drunkiness and overuse, and not to deliberately make drinks really strong. But not once did God outright forbid alcohol. There is a verse where God commands the Hebrews to drink wine and be merry at one of their festivals. If alcohol were forbidden, Jesus would not have turned water into wine in the first place.

As for the old/sick people issue, yes, this is true. In the book of Timothy it is stated that Timothy should drink wine every now and then to help with his stomach issues. This is because water was not the safest thing to drink back then, and ancient beer/wine, which was either brewed or contained enough alcohol, was safer. It's the same reason that ale was the most widely consumed beverage in the ancient world, because water often was contaminated and dirty.

If God said no alcohol, then those Trappist/Abbey ales being brewed by monks are pretty blasphemous.

Psalm 104:14-15 - "He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate-- bringing forth food from the earth; wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts."

The above verses remind me of a quote by Benjamin Franklin, "Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy."

As a Christian, I understand I have an image to uphold. If me having beer offends a brother or causes him to stumble, I won't do it in their presence. But me having a beer in the privacy of my home is between me and the good Lord, and I think He doesn't have a problem with that

There is a line between alcoholism and beer enthusiast , some people may see our fervor over beer as that we have a drinking problem, when in fact it is a passion, we may talk and think and trade beer but we are not drinking it 24/7.

My girlfriend's mom told her to stop drinking. She has two beers a day. She is such a lightweight and it was funny when she told me the story. I think people mistake enthusiasm with alcoholism. Her mom sees the fridge full of beer and over hears her talking about beer but not looking at the actual beer consumption. This may be the issue you are having.

Same here, my uncle is a heavy drinker, and alcoholism runs on my mom's side.

I was thinking the same thing. Who the hell tells someone drinking 2-3 beers on weekends that they're an alcoholic?

Alcoholism shouldn't be defined by how much you drink, just why you drink it

Some people have some pretty weird ideas about alcohol, particularly teetotalers.

I say just try to keep it in check. Only you know your limit. Try to stay within it.
