I am looking for a beer with the closest, recipe to the original liquid bread. I have had Great Divide and a few others. Can't seem to find a true heavy beer.

Weihenstephaner Korbinian is the correct* answer to your question :sunglasses:.

Also, look for Paulaner Salvator, Spaten Optimator, Tucher Bajuvator... and Klosterbrauerei Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel -- the first two are easy enough to find, but the last two aren't available in the U.S. at present.

Closer to home: Capital and Sprecher offer rotating / seasonals which might work, and August Schell will pull out a nice rendition from time to time. Check here for some more suggestions, and good luck with your search!

*Only my humble opinion -- I've sampled and enjoyed many.

Paulaner Salvator gets my vote (my beer of choice when at Black Forest Inn)...the original doppelbock... or Ayinger Celebrator and a very distant third Spaten Optimator. All widely available in the TC area...

    Cheers!

I think Capitol makes like 47 Doppelbocks, or something like that.

They make 48, actually. I second Capitol, especially the Autumnal Fire.

Capital is a great recommendation. And of course the German brewed dopplebocks.

I usually refer to liquid bread as the original hefeweizens. Weihenstephaner fresh at the brewery is banana bread!!

Most of the doppelbock listed in the thread are caramel and malt flavor profiles. I don't disagree with the list however, I don't think it is liquid bread. With that being said my favorite is Aventinus. It rivals all the Belgians in complexity and overall drinking experience. Flavor profiles include citrus spice, malt, dark fruits, etc.

Is there a liquor store in the twin cities that sells Weihenstephaner?

Any good beer store should have it.

South Lyndale Liquor carries most everything above plus look out for the Great Divide Wolfgang which in my opinion is a wonderful rendition. While you are at it if you get the Aventinus also get their eisbock as well, also Hofstetten is gonna have some great bocks as well.

FYI, at the Black Forest you can get a PITCHER of Salvator for the same price as a pitcher of Stella ... $14.50!

And, Blue Max has a bunch of Einbecker beers, one of my favorites.

Salvator IS the original Dopplebock brewed by the monks. Korbinian and Celebrator are better though. Stick with these three for the most part.
