I presume I'm not the only one that finds this statement disingenuous? Seems to be a source of pissing matches on BA forums, where even a matter of fact mention of alcohol or its effects is met with haughty derision by a subset of BAs. I say "subset" because there are hedonistic discussions as well. Maybe disassociating from the hedonism and elevating connoisseurship is what drives the alcohol deniers. Just strikes me as unnecessary and incredible to take the position that alcohol is irrelevant in enjoying an alcoholic beverage, or that this premise is necessary to be a true beer aficionado, or that acknowledging alcohol renders you a degenerate. Sort of like declaring that you buy Playboy just for the articles.

I have serious digestive issues and it looks like Alcohol plays a role. I'm looking at the real possibility of not being able to drink at all, or just on rare occasions. I could care less about getting an alcohol 'fix' through hard liquor, wine, mead, etc etc. I LOVE beer though and hate the idea of not being able to drink. If I could get Heady Topper without the alcohol, I'd be a very happy man. Hell, If I could get a good lager or Kolsch sans the alcohol I'd be happy. (I have HT sitting in my fridge that I'm afraid to touch right now. it sucks...)

So every time someone pops open a beer, they are doing so primarily to get buzzed?

geez, I've wasted a ton of cash on overpriced brews. I'm going to return my bcbs vanilla and cherries for malt liquor. Even better, screw beer altogether. I'll go to greenpoint and get me some spiritus. much more cost effective.

It's the source of pissing matches, so you decided to bring it up again?

'For the alcohol' essentially implied that the alcohol in the beer (and its effects) is the primary (and perhaps sole) reason for drinking it. To me, alcohol is on occasion, a fringe benefit. The primary reason I drink beer is the same as when I drank root beer when I was 12: I think it tastes great.

I think a good hypothetical question to ask is, if the beer you like suddenly become alcohol free, without having any change on taste, would you still drink it? For me this is easy to answer.

I don't drink beer or any alcohol to "cope" or anything along those lines. Alcoholic beverages do seem to need the complete profile to truly enjoy them, though. I also don't mind the warm and sometimes happy feeling, though I've never lost my wits. Just a personal thing. I just avoid the discussion when my dad says something like "Why not just drink grape juice?" when people talk about wine. Nothing compares to beer, though.

Hi, my name is loafinaround, and I actively sought out alcoholfrei beer while pregnant. I found one german bock that was almost palatable....
That is proof that malt and hops can be an obsession w/o alcohol.

Has there ever been a pissing match that wasn't fueled by alcohol?

Call me old fashioned, but that doesn't seem like a sober activity.

This. Why do you think the guinness book of world records involves guinness?

I don't purchase beers based on ABV but on taste and style. Alcohol is a small bonus that goes with them. So no, I don't drink beer for the alcohol.

My beer drinking 5 years ago (Macro Lagers): For Flavor - 0% To get hammered - 100%

My beer drinking today (Craft) : For Flavor - 60% To get hammered - 40%

I know these are just my made up statistics, but I'm willing to believe that zero percent of us drank macro swill for the flavor. Call it whatever you like, but the "relaxing effects" we were going for drinking macro didn't just disappear when craft came on the scene. I know I can't speak for everyone, but the uproar against alcohol is funny to me.

You're original post is extremely verbose and lacks clear structure.

I can honestly say that my total Macro Lager consumption before I started homebrewing and then onto craft was a grand total of more than 1 but less than a 12 pack. Just never dug it and was a distilled spirits guy for the first 10 years of my drinking career. Decided I wanted to make homebrew so I didn't have to drink macro lagers. That's been it basically.

    married into Brooklyn polishness
I refuse to drink that shit. It's fucking lighter fluid... legit. My husband gets irritated by the fact that I use it only to 1) sterilize wounds, and 2) clean greasy things. That's it.
