Said to me as I was purchasing at liquor store today:

"I like that beer. I dont normally drink IPAs, but I like that one."

Is that actually a positive selling point? Wouldnt that suggest that an IPA fan might not like it then?

Btw, it was Inversion IPA, so he wasnt wrong, but it was just an odd comment.

That is one very standard example of an IPA so makes no sense. I keep a sixer of this at home at all times

That seems like exactly the reaction Sam Adams was going for with their Rebel IPA campaign.

To read that person's statement between the lines another way, he could have been saying, "I'm afraid to drink IPAs, but I tried that one and I liked it." That's a positive statement on behalf of that beer.

I have heard several people who "don't like IPAs" mention how much they like Two Hearted. I believe the statement is in regards to these people appreciating the "positive" aspects the beer delivers without the "negative" qualities these people do not appreciate in the style. You can have a very smooth, balanced, juicy and floral IPA that has mass appeal without the biting bitterness that turns many off.

I think this may be said in regards to a "balanced" IPA. I consider those to be hoppy, yet not tongue splitter type IPA's. I like both personally.

In other words - 'I haven't cared for the majority of IPAs that I've tried that were all very shitty, but I did enjoy that IPA, because it's not a shitty one.'

Hmm... He likes Inversion but not other IPAs? Makes you wonder what his experience base looks like. The comment strikes me as very odd; to me, Inversion is a very good, but very typical tasting IPA. It does have a nice, balancing malt backbone to support the big hopping and a noticeable bite of bitterness (80 IBU). If you like IPAs, you may not be blown away, but you'll probably enjoy an Inversion.

Personally, I think this guy kinda pulled that comment out of his ass.

I guess I don't see what's so weird about this. Personally I don't care for major bitterness and I'm not big on heavy citrus and piny flavors, but there are a couple out there that I can enjoy when I'm in the right mood. There might be certain aspects of a style that someone doesn't like but which are absent/muted in a particular example, or which have more of some other flavor they do appreciate.

No he is exactly right. I was about to creat a thread about this. Just drank a wicked weed farm house brew. I don't have the palate for the style I guess, but anything WW touches does no wrong IMO. So no, inversion is phenomenal. Any brewery who can change your mind (and taste) on how the style should taste you should stick with em. I have with the weed! Cheers!

I would say it definitely is not a selling a point, not because it would suggest an IPA might not like it (which I don't think it actually does) but because I would have no trust in his point of reference.

Bells approach to ipa's basically opened the door for me to the style. VERY well balanced...even hopslam, nice sweetness in there to help handle the heavy hops. Hoptimum didn't do it for me like Hopslam. Bell's makes great beer..me likey.

It's strange. I was never a fan of IPA's, they were always too bitter to me. Over the years of drinking various types of beer I've found myself starting to enjoy IPA's. First IPA I liked was Dogfish 90. Started trying some others out and I guess my taste buds have built up a tolerance. I especially enjoy Sierra Neveda's Homptimum! Delicious stuff

I love IPAs. Inversion is my least favorite of all IPAs, so I can see why someone who doesn't like IPAs may like it.

Not a Deschutes hater, Fresh Squeezed is among my all time favorites.

So rare and refreshing when someone makes sense on this site.

why should it be a selling point? you don't make commission on ringing someone out for beer.

I wonder if the people i made meaningless small talk with all week spend this much time dissecting every random thought that pops in my head the 60th time I ring a beer out in a day.

Inversion is the typical piney bitter ipa. Weird.

An aside, I strangely had Torpedo on draft for the first time along side HUB's IPA....it was Lebron playing bball against a junior high girl. I was impressed.

Sounds like you ran into the most interesting man in the world, at least he wasn't trying to sell you Dos Equis.
