I tend to think of any fruited sour as a lady drink. Then I think about watching Chopper, and folks telling him that the .410 was a ladies gun. And my grandma keeping a .32 revolver in her purse. Time and place for everything.
I would agree. I find sours to be unpleasant, a chore to drink. I also don’t like most fruit beers - including blueberry lagers.
Are there enough blueberry lagers that this statement is even necessary? Are the blueberry lagers in the room with us now?
They only labeled it an IPA because that's ALL they brew and we became keen to it. Soon Bigfoot will also be labeled a TIPA, cuz that's what it is
As I've said in many a 'Dumcrapped' review, there's a difference between 'earthy', 'dirt-eatin'-but-in-a-good-way' and just plain "dirt-mud-undrinkable' taste(s). Certain hops in certain combinations (as well as certain breweries yeast/water....almost ALL of New Belgium brews) give me that funky, 'dirty' flavor & aftertaste. Earthy is one thing, a mouthful of mud is an entirely different and displeasant story.....
I’m afraid to tell you guys about the blueberry lagers I’ve tried for fear of being told I sometimes drink “lady” beers.
Blueberry lagers must be something that I have a complete blindspot for. Now I want to hunt one down.
I don’t know distribution areas, so I’m of little help in that regard. Unless you can get Grain Belt Blu in VA.
Oberon. It's huge here (Michigan), and I was even living in Kalamazoo when the beer was still called Solsun. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. I like wheat beers, but Oberon has just never worked for me.
I know I've had blueberry ales in the past. Not sure if I've ever tried a blueberry lager? On the whole I'm not a huge fruit beer lover, though New Glarus makes excellent ones, so if they came out with a blueberry lager, I'd try and hunt that down.
I get it, it is a touch abrasive, but gave one to a friend of ours from across the pond (in his 80's mind you) and he was floored. Personally love it, but since locally we get Wooden Cask offerings of The Scotsman and can't get Old Chub we are satisfied....plus Wooden cask has Great Scott which is the bourbon barrel aged version which is fantastic! Cheers
Try some of the stuff from The Bruery and you might start liking the fruit brews....especially the imperial stouts ranging in the upper teens in ABV.
Just because I lived in Wyoming and traveled to Montana, we are talking about the Moose Drool from Big Sky, correct?
@liteon163, I have an outstanding brown ale, and many other beers available to split with you. I would love to continue this conversation in-person. Hopefully you are available to meet up when I am in town soon. I have many concerts and Milwaukee Brewers games on my schedule. I will certainly be at Central Waters MKE before each day of Milwaukee Metalfest the first weekend of June.
My wife is the same way. IPA is pretty much the only style she likes, with a few specific exceptions. But Celebration she doesn't, even though it's one of the most well regarded. Maybe it's a bit maltier than the average IPA, and/or a specific hop profile?
I have had this kind of relationship with beers that have a lot of clove/all-spice flavor, so Belgian tripels, Belgian pale ale, some saisons and farmhouse or wild ales, occasionally even wheat beers. I never say never though. I try hard to practice the theory of "yet" — as in "I don't enjoy this beer/beer style 'yet.'" Cheers!
