I have tried quite a few stouts, and almost all of them come off as a cold coffee to me. The few I've had that I don't hate were the Dark Horse Fore and Shorts S'mores Stout (I could drink a LOT of that one). How does someone who can't stand the taste of coffee learn to love a beer style that is very coffee-heavy?

    HALP ME!

I have a bottle of Dark Horse One, which is an oatmeal stout. I'll give them a shot. Local store has Left Hand Milk Stout too, which I can try. Thanks for the suggestions...

Yeah I'd say maybe seek out some stouts that are geared towards a different flavor profile, there are plenty of them out there. Like oldp0rt said, milk and oatmeal stouts - but also barrel-aged stouts, chocolate stouts, etc. Stouts are big right now so I don't think you'll have much trouble finding a good niche that you'll enjoy.

If you could get your hands on Southern Tier's Choklat (there are still a few floating around in Wisconsin at least) or some chocolate stouts I think you'd change your mind

First, stop drinking them out of the same cup you do coffee. Second, avoid stouts that have actual coffee in them. Third, pick up a bottle of Stone IRS when it comes out, which is soon (April, I think).

I am really new to drinking different beers and especially new to dark beer. I actually found myself drinking founders porter. It was a really smooth easy drinking beer that was not to heavy on any one flavor. After about a case of that stuff i found myself trying other porters and then stouts. Now i love stouts. Dragons's Milk, KBS, Breakfast stout and others. Another good dark porter is Anchor Porter. Its really sweet and bready and not heavy on dark flavors.

Im by no means an expert as i am new to all of this. Just the way i started my adventure in beer.

my recommendation is that you limit your [beer drinking] to the [beers] your enjoy. you can also insert other things into the brackets like food, music, women (or men), and you'll find that your life is better because you're doing what you enjoy.

Don't worry about liking a style, drink want you like, and let it happen organically.

Dude I despise coffee...never made it past one or two sips. I freaking love Founders Breakfast Stout. One of the most coffee forward stouts in the world...if not the most. To be honest with you I didn't like the first bottle I had but as I got into a few more I just got it. It's just good...In a way I had to train my palate to ignore the fact that it was coffee I was tasting and let the flavor blend into the beer. I still don't drink coffee but I think if you drink some of the better coffee forward stouts available you too will just get it. Do what you need to do to get some FBS and let it wear on you...it will change your beer drinking life and open up your palate to a lot more amazing stouts out there.

Joe's Coffee Porter got me into the taste. Founders Breakfast Stout sealed the deal. Now I like coffee. /story

Coffee flavors can be very off-putting, no doubt, but there are some good suggestions up above. I'd also encourage you to -slowly- work your way towards being able to tolerate coffee notes. Worth mentioning that some Chocolate ales (and chocolate-y beers) can possess notes* which veer toward being coffee-like, but there are also a good number of milk and sweet stouts out there to ease you gently into these coffee beers

*e.g., roast and burnt characteristics. I'm "lucky" in that I loved coffee since I was a child, heh heh.

I don't drink or like coffee, but I'm in love with it in beer. It just works.

Beer itself though is notorious for being an acquired taste, so, it may just take time. Most people have something that they hated at first, but have grown to love. Sours I think have the highest conversion rates, i.e. going from "I hate sours" to "OMG I'm obsessed with them".

I'll look up the Souther Tier bottles, and the Founders of course. Thanks for those suggestions.

And I'm trying to get into the world of stouts to see what I'm missing. If I didn't venture into different beer styles that were "uncomfortable" to me, I'd have never gotten into things like lambics or sours (my wallet wishes I hadn't). I think stouts are the same deal. And I'm closer to enjoying them than I was even 3 years ago. Now I enjoy a good black IPA and even an occasional porter. Stouts are kinda my last step...

I'm going to say dont like stouts. You don have to. Nobody is making you drink em. There are many great beers that aren't stouts. So dont drink em. Dont force yourself, and dont take the consideraton of others affect your decision. But, for my .02, stouts are a great style. I love me a great stout/ba stout/irish/oatmeal. But that's just me, find you some you.

If you don't like coffee, stay away from LHMS. It tastes EXACTLY like one of those semi-frozen coffee/chocolate drinks from Dunkin Donuts, but with alcohol and bubbles. Which, to me, was not a bad thing at all, but might be for you.

The beer release calendar put together on here says May, and May 31 last year.

I'll be casing that joint, though, for sure. I had a 2008 recently -- my first Stone RIS -- and it was beautiful. Can't wait to try it fresh and over time......
