On Saturday I brewed a German Pilsner. It was a sunny 90 + degree day. I have not read or heard any talk about sun light affecting the hops in the boil or while cooling the wort. I tasted my hydrometer sample and it tasted normal. Should I be concerned?
I am not sure if I should be worried, thats why I asked the question. My system is run with a natural gas flex line that allows me to brew in my driveway,(no shade) or brew in my garage.
If it's skunking (thiols) you're worried about, I don't think I've ever heard of that being a problem with unfermented wort. It may be because there's not enough Riboflavin (needed for the skunking reaction) in wort (before yeast is added), or maybe the thiols (if they are produced in wort) are transformed/scrubbed later in the boil or fermentation.
I wondered the same this weekend while brewing in the driveway. Glad to hear vikeman doesn't think it's an issue.
Never had a problem. I always brew in the full sun. Everything that goes in my beer grew in full sun, so I can't imagine a problem from it.
That reminds me of when we were building our home, and the contractor said that having the framing get constantly wet from rain (before the roof went up) wouldn't hurt it, because the trees the wood came from were fine in the rain. I disagreed. Having said that, I do agree in this case that there shouldn't be a problem.
