I have been a huge fan of pliny for many years. I have a regular trading partner in the bay area that gets it to me very fresh, sometimes within a day or 2 of bottling. Last night for the first time i questioned weather pliny is my favorite IPA/DIPA. No other has ever done this. I'm not saying this beer is better, but it has made me question pliny for the first time. Now for the big reveal....

    Fat heads Head Hunter....discuss..

I have a few IPAs I would pick before Pliny, not saying Pliny is not an awesome IPA though.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Pliny, yet, but I'd say Heady Topper is the Best.

Im gonna have to disagree with you. Im no pliny homer, but doesnt really compare to HH. Pliny is much better. Although, tastes are all subjective anyway. So to you it might.

    Cheers!

I've had multiple Pliny killers. Pliny is great, but certainly not the best in my opinion

Pliny was dead before Heady had a shot at it. Never understood the hype behind PtE.

White Rajah > Head Hunter by a hair.

Heady Topper > Pliny by a significant margin.

But all 4 are excellent beers that I'd love to drink anytime.

I love me some Pliny but I must give a shout out to Kuhnhenn Double Rice IPA (DRIPA)!

Jack's Abby Kiwi Rising is better than Pliny too. Heady Topper also. There are tons of great DIPA's out there that can compete and be just as good or even better than Pliny. Hell Pliny isn't even the best that Vinnie makes (blind pig) No suprise here.

To me, White Rajah is the best single IPA (under 8%) on the planet. I realize it gets pretty high acclaim here overall, but it still surprises me to see it at #15 on the top ipa list. White Rajah and Alpine Duet are in a league of their own to me in terms of regular ipas.

As for Pliny, it's really good. But there are at least a handful of DIPAs that I enjoy more.

While I wouldn't define it as killing Pliny, Lawson's Double Sunshine is rated slightly higher in my reviews. Abner and Heady are right there as well.

It always bewilders me a bit when people talk about beers like Double Sunshine and HT being better than Pliny, though of course I understand that as DIPAs they're going to be compared.

To my mind, of course HT and Lawson's IPAs, as well as offerings from Alpine and Hill Farmstead, are going to tend to outclass Pliny- they're from much smaller breweries and are produced much less frequently. Hell, HT is The Alchemist's only beer- it had damn well better be one of the best hoppy beers on the planet.

All this being said, Pliny that's under a week old remains something to be reckoned with.

Luckily enough, I will be going to Pittsburgh between the holidays and will get a shot at Fat Head's Head Hunter...thanks for the post. I probably wouldn't have thought twice about trying to make it there otherwise.
