Pliny is a classic, but with all these newer hops that are out there some people are bound to prefer well crafted IPAs that make use of Citra, Galaxy, Nelson, Motueka , etc. I'd love to see Russian River make a New Zealand Pliny.

Ive had a few kiwis and I wouldnt go as far as to say its better then pliny. I liked Blind pig as well but I would give the nod to pliny still.

Abner is better and so is S&S #5.

I wanted to try double sunshine really bad but unfortunately I could only get my hands on hopzilla...drank that last night followed by heady. It isnt even close. Whatever they are doing in Waterbury is magic.

I am hoping I'm not alone on this one but I thought Drake's Aroma Coma was phenomenal.

I feel like you can't have a "Pliny Killer" unless you've had it at least a dozen times. Drinks better and better every time I have it. Last month, I got the first pour of a fresh keg of it. Deeeeee-rishus

Head Hunter is an amazing IPA. That's my go-to here in Pittsburgh.

With all the praise this beer is getting I'm wondering if the keg at the Bistro IPA festival was off. It was just completely forgettable.

Not sure about "killing" Pliny, but if I want a similar hop fix Uinta's Hop Notch and Odell Myrcenary are both on the same level. Plus, Hop Notch is dirt cheap.
Dry Dock's Hop Abomination should be in cans and gaining additional distribution next year. I think that one and their normal DIPA will both surprise some people.

I haven't had Pliny (yet) however I really loved Hop Stoopid and Avery Mahrajah.

Well, I think it's just about the only thing they make because it's one of the best hoppy beers on the planet; they don't have enough of a reason to focus on anything else! :grinning:

Never had Pliny, but Head Hunter is undeniably awesome.

And since others brought it up... Head Hunter > White Rajah.

I love these threads. Each one reminds me how terrible Pliny is and how nice and shiny and new every other beer on the planet is. This is why I avoid crappy old beers like Rodenbach Grand Cru and Weihenstephaner. Seriously, get with the bourbon and barrel aging programs and maybe try some exotic hops, guys!

Pliny is a good beer, though is far from the best DIPA out there. It's a solid B+/A- beer, but with nearly every brewery churning out as many IPAs as possible nowadays, it's not difficult to find DIPAs on par or better than PtE.
