Hi fellow beer fans. For many years, I've always hated the bitterness of beer. Any kind of beer, I just hate anything bitter. I think it's the hops - that's my guess. Anyway, after trying many different styles, I seem to have come across Belgian Styles that I don't hate so much. I prefer high ABV Belgian dubels, triples and quads but one thing I can tell you is this - I love everything from Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY. Even their IPA's which normally I can't get anywhere near an IPA, I love everything from this brewery. Can anyone tell me why I might be in this situation? Could it be the hops they use? Does anyone else have this problem or situation? To me, it's the least bitter tasting beer I've ever found and I've tried over 200. Any help understanding this would be appreciated because I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

It’s fairly common for people to dislike beer because of its bitter taste.

I just don’t understand why this has only dawned on you after 3 years of beer advocacy? Slow pace toward being a Poo-bah eh?

I absolutely hated ipa and pale ales the first time I tried them, it takes your taste buds a little to get to where you enjoy them

It's just like food, sir. Everyone's palate is different. The simple answer is don't question it, and continue to drink what you like. Cheers!

Please give a fresh New England IPA a try next time you can!

You might be surprised just how low of a bitterness many of them have. Plus they were named after the region you live in

It could be the yeasts, in the Begian styles, fit your palate better. Drink what you like, don't pressured into drinking what all the cool kids lust for, and explore when you can.

If you like Ommegang, I suggest looking for the beers from Unibroue, which are also Belgian styles, widely available, and very reasonably priced.

Wait til you get into heavily peated scotches. I always had a taste for them, but many people think they are really medicine-y, bandaid-y... chemical laden.

Once you know that going in, they are so sweet and rich and delicious. Very acquired taste, but clearly there's a good chunk of the population who can dig it.

Macro beers are so light in flavor on the malt side so that the hops and their bitterness are more forward. All beers use hops except for the few styles that use herbs, etc. as bittering agents, but you don't really taste them in beer styles that are malt heavy such as the Belgian styles that you mentioned. Malt is typically a sweet flavor so it has to be bittered to balance the beer's taste to make it drinkable. However, don't assume that you will like all Belgian beers because there are some breweries that brew a Belgian IPA, for example. Stouts, porters, brown ales, and amber ales tend to be malty, although there are exceptions, especially in the amber category. German beers (except the pilsener) might also fit your tastes. Try those styles and stay away from the pale ales, IPAs, and pilsners until you are more ready to venture into them.

I would try NEIPA and Sours, maybe wheat beers? I guess it is just a matter of hit and miss, the best solution is make a list of what you enjoy and check off the bad ones and before long you should have a decent amount you want to drink. Good luck and stick around some, you have been a member for awhile, post up pics and join in the conversations more.

I love Brewery Ommegang too. One difference I've always noticed about their beers is that they are very effervescent and highly carbonated, regardless of style. Do I think that's the reason you enjoy them so much? Probably not. But it's something that I've always felt sets them apart from other breweries.

I agree with all of this!

Might be as simple as drinking Pale Ales. There are loads of excellent examples, mostly of the American style out there.

Let me suggest that you consider giving fruit "sours" a try. Hudson Valley in Beacon, NY could be close depending on where in Connecticut you live.

I’ve had ommegang Ipa 4 years ago , not in quite a while. I liked but In my Untappd I did say it needed more bitterness. Could be that it’s not as bitter as many other IPA and for you it’s ok.

    Enjoy

Trois pistoles is phenomenal. And lacks bitterness.

If you're visiting breweries it helps to ask what hops are being used in the beers you like and in the ones you don't. Some hops provide a stark resinous character, while others something akin to citrus peel and others still more peppery characteristics. In my experience, knowing which hops are being used might open you up to a wider variety of styles so long as some breweries aren't using that particular hop you don't like regardless of the style. Hope this helps and happy hunting. by the time you find them perhaps your palate will allow for more IBUs. Cheers!
