    Short back story.

OK so I brewed my first partial mash yesterday. Target was 1.066 but only hit 1.061. As my father and I were cooling our wort down to get ready to pitch the yeast it started pouring with rain...like seriously pouring, so we pulled out the wort chiller and moved the wort inside. It was about 80 degrees so we figured we'd put it in the swamp cooler and let it cool down those 10 degrees. But it wouldn't cool down, an hour later it was still 76 degrees. Finally after about 90 minutes it cools down to 72 degrees so we decided to pitch the yeast. I had made a 1.3L starter using WP001 yeast, I've done it before and it worked perfectly.

Here is where I think we screwed up. Little did I know that while we were waiting that 90 minutes for it to cool down my father had removed the stirbar from the starter...he poured the starter in and left most of the yeast on the bottom of the flask (which he dumped out saying it was trub.)

So I woke up this morning and there is zero activity, I think my dad basically threw away all the yeast. Here is my question. Should I wait another 24 hours and monitor activity? I kind of think there is little to no yeast in the wort. Should I go out and buy another 001 ASAP and make a 24 hour starter? Or should I rehydrate 2 packets of US-05 I have in my fridge?

I'm so annoyed that he dumped out the starter and he's now blaming me for making a "bad starter" haha. The joys of brewing with the family.

Well, he didn't throw away "all" the yeast, but a lot of it.

Correct not all of it but a lot of it.

Well, I hope someone else chimes in, as I don't know which of the two yeast additions would be better at this point.

Good Luck, and try not to kill your dad.

At this point, I'd want to get sufficient yeast into the wort ASAP. So I'd rehydrate and pitch now.

You'll be fine with one. Just sprinkle it in and let it do its thing.

    Was going to say this.
I think that the remaining yeast in the beer are doing there thing, albeit slowly, and you'll need to wait for some time for them to get to adequate numbers to really get going. PLus, they're pretty stressed about now, I would think.
Rehydrate one pack of uS-05 (I think it's the same yeast as wlp01 and wyeasts 1056) and get it in there.

One pack (11.5 g), rehydrated, should provide enough viable cells, assuming it's not very old and has been kept cold.

Woke up this morning and airlock was popping about once every 2 seconds. So we've got action. Thanks again.
