I was wondering if I could still possibly post my reviews of beers due to the fact that I cannot distinguish the aroma of one beer from another. I have no problem distinguishing tastes and colors, but for the life of me I feel that all beer from Bud Light to Arrogant Bastard all smells the same. Am I alone in not being able to distinguish scents.

Try pouring a small amount into a small glass. A good strong head will increase aroma. As you continue your journey you'll get better at discerning Aromas. Keep it up and best of luck. Cheers!

Is this a problem outside of beer? Can you detect the difference between pineapple and oranges?

Pour the beers in some sort of glass that will capture aromas better--snifters, tulips, wine glasses, etc. Make sure they're ~45-55 degrees before pouring. Also, agitate (swirl) the beer before smelling. You can also put your hand over the top of the glass while swirling and then remove it and smell immediately.

buy different scented extracts and smell them on occasion to try to differentiate between a few of the basic smells then as you become more comfortable get other more subtle scents to work on.

Considering taste is predominantly based on aroma and you say you can distinguish the tastes, I think you just need to continue trying and you will eventually heighten your sense of beer smell  Follow the good advice already given to you in this thread and keep trying. You can do it!

Yeah, this sounds pretty serious. Do the beers all have the same distinctive smell, or can you not smell them at all?

I know how you feel. Its not that bad for me, but I eradicated my sense of smell a while ago. I can still get out most of the scents, but they're just not as extreme as they should be. Everyone I know can smell things first and more intensely than I can. It sucks, but I can at least distinguish. If you can't smell anything then it's just going to be a problem. If you just can't distinguish you might have to keep trying.
